Hey DeeJ, about those Exotic Shards...
Not quite sure how I feel about this, DeeJ ole boy.
We went from being able to use easily ascertainable ascendant materials (two guaranteed chances of grabbing ascendent shards/energy a day through daily heroic mission, daily public event award from postmaster, or randomized reward from completing a public event) to not so easy to acquire strange coins for maxing out our exotic gear and weapons.
Before everyone tries to lynch me for my personal opinion, there is a reason why I made this into a poll.
Bungie needs feedback on all their changes, whether they're good, bad, or just plain awful. We can make the change and we can make it here (if needed).
IMO (In my opinion for those unfamiliar with lazy net speak): I feel this is just another stunt for slowing down maximum exotic progression and purchases for casual players (yes, casual players) and here is why.
Now that they've given some of these exotics the hefty set of balls that they needed so desperately earlier on, people will go on to use them more frequently (after acquiring them). This means perks will be unlock in a quicker manner (even for players who play this casually), and eventually maxed out quicker. Then Xur comes along to sell a new weapon/gear they dont have yet, they used their saved coins to buy said weapon/gear (or maybe they just want to upgrade their sparrow and even give it a fancy glow trail) rinse and repeat.
But that really isn't rinse and repeat for everyone. Lets look at the pricing for a moment...
Exotic weapons and armor can go anywhere from 13-23 strange coins a piece.
Sparrow Upgrades go for 23 coins a piece.
and now "Exotic Shards" go for 7 coins a piece.
Thats going to suck for a lot of players who've been sitting on exotic gear that hasn't been quite maxed out yet and for players just coming into the game. They're going to have to make a decision on whether to save up for the possibility of a new exotic weapon/armor from Xur...or to spend it JUST to get that last tidbit of extra damage/armor.
To conclude my personal opinion, I feel that this was merely a tactic Bungie has utilized to slow down the maximum progression of an exotic item ("maxing out") and/or rate of exotic purchases from Xur. I state again, that is nothing more than my personal opinion.

I agree with you on the slowing down strategy. I personally think they should just make xur permanent in the tower and just switch up his gear weekly. That would be much more fair to casual players. As far as the shards go....they should be able to be bought with Ascendent shards or energy. But then why make exotic materials in the first place? Some people that were saving up their shards/energy but hadn't leveled up their armor or weapons yet got pwn'd when the patch came through Also, if they were going to make exotic shards, I think they shouldve just made exotic energy too. It seems a little lazy that before, exotic weapons took energy and armor took shards, and now everything just takes shards.

I'm not against exotic shards. They're actually easier than ascendent materials in my opinion. Even grinding multiple characters you can only gets you about 6 and it takes 18 - 24 to upgrade most stuff. With exotic shards you only need 1. I have two characters and I usually do the nightfall twice on 28 (soon to be 30). That's 18 coins, plus stuff from the cryptark, and random drops. And most weeks I don't want anything xur sells. So I'm sure I'll be able to get plenty of exotic shards. My problem is having to reset the weapons to get them fully leveled. If the exotic shards opened up a new level of upgrades I'd be all for it. But i hate the reset on them. That I am totally against.

Edited by ThunderD: 12/4/2014 2:49:56 PMMy thinking is re-leveling exotics though I think is ridiculous, stupid, and absurd, hopefully won't be as bad as I think. saving up on strange coins though and make sure you have 3 charters capable of doing weekly, I'm sure the recruitment page will have more "I need someone for weekly" requests. My other concern is all r he legendary guns I have maxed up with upgrade path. That sucks, because some I like more than exotics and....you can only use 1 exotic at a time. It's not like I can use Truth endlessly. I liked how legendary and exotics had the same 300 max but exotics had that extra perk I thought that was the point of the distinction between exotic and legendary? I would have rather seen them add some nodes to both exotic and legendary so you can keep using them. I grinded for days in iron banner to get Gheleons Demise and now it won't be good enough anymore. The Game Came Out September 9. 3 months later and every gun in the game is potentially obsolete and only exotics can be upgraded. I personally don't like that. I'll give it a try but that sounds awful to me. Honestly why hinder anyone, why can't every gun be upgradable or reforgeable to legendary? That way we won't have a million people using the same 10 guns all the time.

Why dont they just add 100 more types of currency lol. They should make it a absolute shit show of shards and coins and 507 types of glimmer. I mean why not theres already like 12 different types of currency. Lets get ubsurd with it

1 ReplyI'm fine with the exotic shards but what makes me angry is that we need to re-level up our exotics to reach the new dmg. Cap just why I already have the exotic and I wasted energy/shards , glimmer and materials and most importantly TIME and then get punished. This mean for some one with 6 exotic fully leveled need to rest his progression to re-level them up. They need to address this problem ASAP.

1 ReplyI feel like it's a good thing that exotics have a different upgrade method to the legendaries. Exotics are meant to be the best of the best in Destiny therefore they should require that little bit more of a grind to max out. I am actually happy I will have something to spend my coins on this week due to the fact that Xur has sold exotics I already own for the last 3 weeks and he no longer sells heavy synthesis'. I commend you on your post my man and you make many valid points however I have to say I am all for the exotic shards.

Exotics are more special to upgrade now. But the last damage upgrade? Make the shards for the special perks, one to unlock all of the perks. Let damage be damage.

It makes it interesting but I feel you should have a chance to get between 1-3 depending on what it is.

My brother spent the last 2 weeks trying to get ascendent energy to so the last upgrade to his Invective. He got 30 ascendent shards and 4 energies, we logged on just after the patch, played a bit and he finally got his last energies to upgrade. Opens the menu only to find out that he no longer needs energy, he needs an exotic shard. I laughed, but he didn't take it so well. Guess he'll have to wait another 4 days to buy one off xur, he has no other exotics to dismantle.

I personaly think its a bad idea because of the amount of accident energy and shards I have. But for the community it's probably best for it to be this way, that way not everyone has use for a bazillion copies of the same gun.

9 Strange coins a week from Heroic. I have more strange coins than than materials, and I have hundreds of all 3.

I think that bungie is trying to get us to burn all of our coins before the new expansion. Suddenly when the expansion comes out, you have no coins, and bungie throws us a curveball that new exotic gear is going to need more than 1 exotic shard to max out, we are all going to be grinding away to get to 32 rather than hitting it on the first day.

The problem I have is the availability of Xur is limited to two days a week. If there was a vendor that was always around selling the shards I'd be fine with it.

2 RepliesFunny enough, I think you reasoning for why they did it (to slow down exotic progression) is spot on, but I actually agree with the change. The biggest problem with exotics, is that they are not actually that exotic. It kind of defeats the purpose if half the player base has a full set and they are fully maxed. People complained and will continue to complain that Xur sells the damn things to begin with, and making people choose to between completing their upgrades or getting a new weapon when he comes around, will curtail some of there frequency. The only thing that sucks is that if you've already been working towards leveling one (via shards), some of your hard work has just become wasted. On another note, while I'm ok with no longer being able to trade materials for crucible marks, I do think its not fair that the faction vendors only accept crucible marks. They should in the very least accept both. Or there should be an equal number of vendors that accepts each type.

1 ReplyI just think there should be an alternative route. It should be ONLY exotic shards. Now, what if you get an exotic during the week and need to upgrade fully before xur comes back? You're screwed. At least lower the price of an exotic shard. Make it 5. 7 is a bit expensive. Especially if you're buying an armor piece and weapon

You realise you only need exotic shard for last upgrade, only 1, while legendaries still requires shards, it makes upgrading exotic faster

I'm glad they changed it to exotic shards. Even after doing the raid once a week, doing weekly and Nightfall, daily story and public events I still found myself low on Ascendant materials. I feel the exotic shards bring in use again for Strange Coins (which have been useless for the past few weeks for almost everyone).
