How do you recommend clearing those zombies?

Yea on my first play through that area had me stuck too (i had restart my char with a different class) but im guessing u dont want to do that so if your at the bonfire in that area i would run back to the start of the area and luring them one by one to you and play it safe i can not stress this enough for you first time through this game just block, attack repeat untill you reach the ladder once up the ladder there will be more "zombies" and a white soldier. Sitting against a tree. DO NOT ATTACK HIM (not yet at least) he is very strong and very fast you do not want to fight him at the same time as the "zombies" so instead of him things to look out for in this area once up the ladder are archers there should be two (i could be wrong there might only be 1) if u dont have any ranged attacks there is a way to get to him so starting from the ladder head to the right and there should be an opening in the wall. Go through it then head left and you should see a ladder against a big pillar attached to the wall go up the ladder but once up there there should be a "zombie"up there waiting for you so have your shield or whatever you useing to block after killing him carefully make your way around the big circle to kill the archer (i would advise going back down the way you got up if u jump down it might kill you) then once down just take care of the melee "zombies" with the block, attack technique. Before u pass through the fog if you are feeling confident in your self you can try to kill the white solider. For a sword but only if u are feeling very confident in yourselft. So thats how to get through the first 2 3rds of the lvl and sorry bout the giant wall of text that probably diddent even help you
