I don't think it's explained in the story or lore. Obviously it's a satelite meant for war... But just what the hell is it for and why are they dropping like flies!?
Edit: to all those saying only War satellite in the comments, no sh*t. Yes, we have established its name. I think the lore I'm looking for is who put them in orbit, why, is it part of Rasputins network, why are they falling, why are we defending them. Stuff like that.

Warsats contain rasputins vast library of music that he plays when hes in trouble
-
I saw a cut scene that showed the background info on the Warsat. Apparently they are used to communicate patrol missions to the planets beacons. The reason we have to defend them is to keep our enemies from our importantly gathered Intel. That way we won't be ambushed like that poor guardian at the Hellmouth.

Edited by sergeantawesome: 1/3/2015 5:01:51 AMWar satellite. They were satellites used in the war.

I think warsats are the satellites that Rasputin uses to communicate and use his weapons, like he did in that one grimoire card (cant remember which). Could also be used to coordinate the beacons as said below.

Its a big piece of space junk that can crash into you instantly killing you.

War Satellite

I would assume that a WARSAT is a satellite used by the vanguard to relay vital information to gaurdians across the solar system. The ones we have to defend have crashed into whatever celestial body they happen to be orbiting. These satellites contain critical information that would be highly coveted by our enemies, hence why we have to defend them while they transmit...

War satellite

Its a tasraw bro, look it up.

A thing

Edited by Chrome Shield: 12/31/2014 10:41:06 PMWar Satellite. And they're coming down because their orbits have decayed due to lack of maintenance.

4 RepliesEdited by Noob Sa1bot: 12/31/2014 3:30:49 PMI always assumed it was part of the war mind networks. If you read the card about rasputin bombarding cabal and vex from orbit then you know there are "rods from god" satellites orbiting planets in the system. The bigger question is "What are we doing with all of them?" Edit: Added G card link for reference.

1 ReplyI don't know maybe War Satellite? I mean it did say we had defenses in the past. We currently have satellites in the air for military purposes, so why wouldn't we have too many in 700 years?
-
My thoughts: It's a communication or relay satellite part of the old Warmind network. As for why they're coming down: It has been centuries since the collapse. The orbit of the satellites have probably degraded to the point they can no longer stay in orbit due to any number of factors. For instance, stabilizing rockets/thrusters failing due to age.

1 ReplyWARmind SATellite

A satellite device with really primitive tech. Whoever launched them into space did not understand geosynchronous orbit. Thus the reason the fall from orbit so often. There has to be a billion up there considering there fall rate.
-
1 ReplyIt's something with a cool sounding name for us to defend for some reason. What's that? Oh you want story...
you came to the wrong place
-
1 ReplyI know it stands for WARdrobe SATire. I think it's a reference to how all of our unique legends look the same.

A "War Satalite" WARSAT
-
It's a huge thing that falls from the sky and smash you like an ant. True story.
-
Most of the comments have hit it on the head from what I can tell of it all. There used to be mulitple warminds,Rasputin is the last and they are relics of the golden age. Decaying orbits and an inability for upkeep would be the reason, the logical reason(yes I know it's a video game and logic usually takes a back seat)

That thing that always kills me...

5 RepliesGrimoire cards... Read them.. But think Rasputin & spreading of his AI network
-
I don't know, but they're pretty heavy if they land on you.

1 ReplyI've often wondered this myself. From what I can gather from the general world lore and the vocabulary the game uses; I came to think it is 1 of 2 possibilities. Either the Warsats are Golden Age war satellites that have finally fallen out of orbit and the information they contain is valuable, or they are used currently for military intelligence and the information they hold can't be allowed to fall into enemy hands. My guess is the second choice because in the event you don't just collect data from it, you scan the whole thing for transmat and then it gets beamed away, similar to the sparrow.
