Most concerning gaming trends?

Paid DLC

518

Micro Transactions

597

(Mandatory) always online games

354

Unfinished or broken games

2818

Servers that are not dedicated

191

Digital downloads and pre-downloading

39

Other

137

While all the others I feel are self-explanatory, I will explain why I feel Digital Downloads and Pre-Loading is wrong IMHO. The convenience is great that's obvious what may not be is it is not as competitively priced if they have a captive market, competition is good. Used game market will also die. There may be others I have have missed or couldn't fit in, so please feel free to list other concerns you have if I have not included them or comment on the poll options above if you want. Edit: Dishonourable mentions Pre-orders & Day 1DLC Split screen not being included as standard. Renting servers EA Access & the ilk #Gamersuniteanddontputupforthisshite!

  • Paid DLC: Nothing wrong with this at all. Don't even know why it's a category. Micro Transactions: Not all micro transactions are evil, contrary to popular belief. Always Online Games: Nothing wrong with this either. More and more people are getting internet. Unfinished/Broken Games: The one true answer here. Nothing else comes close. Not Dedicated Servers: Dedicated servers a plus, but if games don't have them it isn't the end of the world. Digital Downloads/Pre-Ordering: I see nothing wrong with both of those. Day 1 DLC: As long as it isn't massive or crucial DLC (ME3 Javik), then nothing is wrong with this. Games get finished, so developers can work on stuff that can ship alongside the game. Split Screen not standard: Not all games should have split screen. Renting servers: What's wrong with this? EA Access: $5 a month for a lot of games. Yeah, what a horrible service.

  • The paid DLC two months after the game release is always a little concerning to say the least.

        • I feel like I'm buying half of games, and I have to buy other pieces as time goes on, so they make more money, we get less content at release. they also do this to drag out play time and give you incentive to continue playing that game months after release

          • I've found Digital games that have physical counterparts to have better sales than at physical stores. I am amazed at how lazy I find myself where I'm like "you mean I have to change the disc!?" I still buy discs when I can though. I don't do micro transactions and by the time I hit the paywall I've usually lost interest. Paid DLC...I get why it happens but if I like the game, I'll get the DLC. I'm appreciating that more games are getting single player DLC. Maps never seem to hit for the game modes I play in multiplayer. Destiny I get because so much of it is Co-op or Vs. UniAss could have had an offline mode. Those are the only games I have with that aspect. Half assed games that meet deadlines suck. UniAss apparently had them, but I never ran into it, but yeah. Not a PC player, so this has never affected me.

                    • Easily the unfinished/ broken games. Maybe it's because some of us grew up in an era where games actually came out and worked correctly 99% of the time. But it's sad when only nintendo is still giving an effort to make all it's games work 99.99% of the time while others (especially ubisoft and ea right now) launch games with maybe not game breaking glitches but still ones that shouldn't be in there to begin with. Just to say a week or two later. Oh we will just patch that. At least bloodborne works perfectly. Only complaint anyone really has is the loading times. Yeah it's too long but otherwise the whole game works perfectly. I haven't encountered any glitches. Or bugs.

                                • I already commented on this post, but I just remembered another thing I hate about modern games. It seems like there are more and more online only games. When your connection turns to shit, literally every aspect of that game becomes completely unplayable. There have been countless times, including today, when I just want to play Destiny and it can't connect to the servers! You should at least be able 2 play story missions offline! But nope! If your connection sucks, screw you!!!!

                                  • I can get used to anything as long as it doesn't cause me grief. The thing I can't abide is a game coming out unplayable, unbalanced. Personally, don't see the gripe with pre-orders. Day 1 DLC, yeah I get it, I just won't buy it. Always online? Okay cool, just make it worthwhile. And anything else I can get behind by. Just don't -blam!- me, never -blam!- me Tony.

                                        • rant time. (wall of text incoming) my personal biggest gripe is when companies produce unfinished games that have clearly been pushed out the door prematurely, and then force you to pay for the rest. Destiny is a prime example of this. it's an ugly trend that nobody likes. I want complete games back. if you are gonna put out Paid DLC, fine. but iI need to have the full standalone experience beforehand. forcing people to pay to get any idea of what is going on is just a greedy move, plain and simple. Micro-Transactions are somewhat annoying, knowing that in games like GTA, someone can get millions without playing nearly as much as those of us who want to get in game currency legitimately by Grinding. It's more annoying if they FORCE it down your throat. we don't need to be told to buy shit every 2 seconds, we will buy it IF WE WANT IT! Always Online sucks, what if your connection goes down, or your internat is having a bad day? your only option is to play something else, which sucks if you have become seriously addicted to the Online Only game. I also like solitude from time to time, which you can't get in those games. Online should only ever be an OPTION. Servers - it really grinds my gears that these multi-billion dollar companies like Rockstar, Bungie etc, can throw enormous amounts of money into a game and then not have the servers to back it up! how does that even happen? it should be obvious that if your game is predicted to be a hit, then you should prepare for lot of online traffic. it should be a developers priority, once a game has been released to SUPPORT that game and fix it's servers when necessary. yes, bugs do happen, but what is more annoying is when they are left unattended, even if they have been informed of the bug's existence! other stuff doesn't really bother me as much, but it still annoys me. rant/ TLDR: RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!

I hate games that get advertised to look better than they actually are. People thought that Destiny would be loaded with content, but instead, we get short changed! We thought Destiny was going to be loaded with lots of content and unique experiences. It turned out to be a disappointment, although still extremely addicting. We thought The Dark Below would make Destiny better and shed some light on the story, or lack thereof. Nope. It too, was a disappointment. By delaying the release of the House of Wolves, Bungie is convincing us that this DLC will be better. They could be working hard on preparing that DLC so that it's better and actually gives us more diverse gameplay, or they could all just be doing nothing but play Destiny and laugh at our gullibility. After we get disappointed by HoW, Bungie will announce Comet, claiming that IT will be better because it's "mega DLC". That too, will probably be a disappointment. Too many games are a disappointment lately. I'm kind of worried that by the time I finish college and become a video game designer, people will just be too used to all of those ripoff games, they'll look at the trailers for my game and say, "THAT LOOKS EPIC!!!!!!!!! Probably just a disappointment, like all these other franchises." If these gaming trends continue, I foresee the possibility of a second gaming crash! GOD FORBID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
