Atheism is a new form of religion. Let's face it.
http://atheists.org/activism/resources/what-is-atheism Theistic definitions of atheism say that it is a religion. Archaic theistic definitions of atheism call it "wickedness". In an extreme literal taking of the bible, atheism depicts the devil because it goes against God, Satan was an angel that went against God. So of course definitions from theistic sources will maintain calling it a religion, because at the heart of calling it a religion is the ability to demonize it or assimilate it with the devil. I'm not saying this is the current intent of calling it a religion, I'm saying that this is where the view of atheism being considered as a religion comes from. I'd rather trust the source I linked above, as a site like "atheists.org" would be under of of heat if it depicted atheism wrongly. It wouldn't be the top search on google unless it was supported, or if it got a lot of bad attention, which it hasn't. It states that atheism isn't technically a religion. The only place I find it okay to consider atheism is the law, in which the US Supreme Court has called it a "specialized religion" in order for the first amendment (freedom of religion is a part of it) to apply to atheists. However think about it, there's no church for atheism, some sects of the religion of Buddhism are atheistic, and you do not consider "theism" by itself a religion. Also the people who are trying to make Richard Dawkins to be the atheistic prophet and The God Delusion the atheistic bible are complete idiots. Richard Dawkins, while very intelligent, does not consider himself a prophet of it, only an outspoken individual who explains why atheism exists. As bill maher said; "if atheism is a religion, abstinence is a sex position"

  •
because at the heart of calling it a religion is the ability to demonize it or assimilate it with the devil.
wut Well, if you want to go down that route, anything that doesn't follow that specific religion is against that religion's God, and is thus associated with the devil. So, I really am not seeing the validity of such a claim.
I'm not saying this is the current intent of calling it a religion,
Good, because it's not.
I'm saying that this is where the view of atheism being considered as a religion comes from.
Perhaps it is the oldest record of its meaning, but that does not mean it's connected to the current intent or should hold any bearing on it at all.

Notable views and definitions from Atheism's first use through 1940

1571 October 20, Arthur Golding, “The Epistle Dedicatory”, in Psalmes of Dauid and others, with M. John Caluin's Commentaries[1]: Ageine, the Atheistes, which say in their hartes there is no God; […] 1604, Samuel Rowlands, “God-leſſe Athiſts”, in Looke to it: FOR, Ile stabbe ye.[2], London: E. Allde, page 23: Thou damned Athiſt, thou incarnate Deuill, That doeſt deny his power which did create thee: a Villaine apt for euery kinde of euill, And all the eyes in heauen and earth do hate thee. 1656, Thomas Stanley quoting Zeno, chapter 15, The History of Philosophy[3], part 8, page 93: A wiſe man is divine: for he hath God with himſelf; but a wicked man is an Atheiſt. An Atheiſt is taken two waies, for him who is an Enemy to the Gods, and for him who believeth there are no Gods : which all wicked men do not. 1692 May 2, Robert Boyle, “A Confutation of Atheism from the Origin of Humane Bodies, Part I”, in Bentley, Richard editors, The Folly and Unreaſonableneſs of Atheism […] [4], edition 4th, London: H. Mortlock, LCC BT1209.B477 1699, page 97: If the Stars be no Deities, Aſtrology is groundleſs: and if the Stars be Deities, why is the Aſtrologer an Atheiſt? 1876 June, W. E. Gladstone, “The Courses of Religious Thought”, Contemporary Review, volume 28, page 22:  By the Atheist I understand the man who not only holds off, like the sceptic, from the affirmative, but who drives himself, or is driven, to the negative assertion in regard to the whole Unseen, or to the existence of God. 1940, C. S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain: Atheists express their rage against God although in their view He does not exist.

No it has been specifically atheism vs Christianity, created by Christians, demonizing atheists. The past 500 years is not that old, especially considering how long the Christian church has had power. They have seen it as a threat, for fear of less power. Less donations. I'd rather go to with the atheistic definition than the Christian one, which has been one of the most powerful religions since antiquity.

I'd beg to differ based on the high level of preaching and trying to get people to give up their religion (convert). People claiming there is no G-d as a fact. And wasn't there an atheist church in the news not too long ago?

If you are referring to the G-d of a monotheistic religion then you capitalize it. In Judaism it is a tradition to leave out the "o" for a couple of reasons. So now you know why I write G-d.

  • I don't try and convert people, I present facts. i think you're a fool to dispute a fact. and you don't have faith in facts. as for the atheist church, yes, it is actually a thing. I've got no idea what they worship there (a church is for worshiping), but I know it isn't a god. and if you scroll down the web page for it, you see a donation goal for almost 1 million dollars. make of that what you will, but I sense a scam.

  • I don't dispute facts. I don't think everything is black and white, and I don't believe in everything word for word.

  • From what I've read atheist church is just RL trolling at worst they have speakers which just amounts to making fun of religions but from the most part it's just people hanging out. It's as much of a religious group as a car club or a comic convention As for converting people it's not really trying to convert because there is nothing to, think of it more like protest to stop something It's not a religion, there is no worship, no comforting sermon, no rules to go by, no morals attached to it.

  • Na, until there's some central organization that governs and defines what an atheist can and cannot do with there personal lives, it's just a loose belief system. The problem is that being an "atheist" can mean different things. Some atheists don't believe in God, and that's all. Others (anti-theists) actively preach science over religion.
