A detailed explanation on how and why the universe formed and how time start and why anything exists. Do not simply say because of the Big Bang, how did the matter form into a tight ball and expand and when did time begin. How did life form exactly, how did we gain consciousness? Answer me those question without anything relating to god, ten i might consider being athiest, but you probably cannot answer these question. Edit: Some of you seem to not like it when people are religious. In the US you are supposed to respect people's beliefs.

  •
Edit: Some of you seem to not like it when people are religious. In the US you are supposed to respect people's beliefs.
You seem to misunderstand; it's not the "beliefs" themselves that should be respected, it's that people have the "right" to their beliefs. This doesn't mean that their beliefs are correct, or closed to criticism.

  • We do not know how what caused the universe, but the God hypothesis is no replacement. If one cannot explain something complex without instigating something more complex, you are useless to expanding human understanding. The universe is infinite. I repeat: infinite. This "tight ball" of energy (not matter, but energy) was infinite, to fit infinity. If you mean human consciousness, it developed around 2,000,000 years ago.

  • When Newton could not figure out some of the motions of the heavenly bodies. He said it was mind of god. He basically gave up and defaulted with the divine and we can't known it. If we never stopped questioning and used god for an answer, We would not be hear communicating on computers having this wonderful discussion. Just because we don't understand or know the answer, it is not god. The answer is I don't know lets go find out.

  • As we grow up as a society and drop these ancient views that cause strife between brothers (genetically speaking we are all related. I mean really related. We have genetic markers that link us all back to Africa. (http://phys.org/news/2013-08-dna-earth.html). Perhaps as time passes and these religions fall away just like the Egyptian, Norse, Greek, and Roman gods have fallen away and we will live in peace as human beings living on a very small planet that we need to take care of.

I think religions will always pop up. Many(I would dare say most) religions are ultimately used to control people. Look at Catholicism for example.

  • I dont feel controlled by Catholicism at all. I feel free to chose my beliefs and lifestyle. However, the goal of being a "model Catholic", or to show absolute love for everyone on the planet, even rapists, murderers, religious fanatics, et cetera, is something I'll never achieve. Catholics arent forced to do anything, and being a devout Catholic is very difficult. An uptight, elitist, controlling Catholic is a bad example of a Catholic.

  • It is our belief that Jesus passed his leadership of the Church to Peter, the first Pope, and thus God has guided him and all succeeding Popes in thier descisions. It's not that we treat the Pope like a god, it is the Pope's responsibility to lead the Church under God's will. If the people of the world are doing something wrong, it is the Pope's job to state his opinion and do something about it. Catholics listen to the Pope because we believe God is monitoring his actions. The Pope was very infuential in the formation of labor unions, the push for women's suffrage, and the ceased production of nuclear bombs and other weapons of mass destruction. The Popes have always tried to guide the world to be a better place, and act in the interest of all people on earth. We follow the Pope because he knows what God wants for the world
he has spent most of his life studying and interpreting scripture
, and he has dedicated his life to the betterment of the world.

  • I would say they are there to control people. But religions are also our Myths. We just need a new mythology to helps us interact with each other and the world we experience. You may enjoy books or lectures by the late Joseph Campbell. His Mythos series was fantastic.

  • We don't know everything, just like you don't know how God first got here. Don't ask for our world when you don't have your own.

Of course we can't. We don't know. But that doesn't mean it isn't real. We didn't know about bacteria centuries ago, but they still existed.
