Q: When it comes to strikes, you're a _______. But I'm "both". There is no option for me!
Assume you have all the time in the world and you're soloing if you're "in the middle or both." This will help you identify what you really PREFER. Certainly, when faced with a time crunch but really want to play, we'll change out tactics from our true desires. However, with unlimited time, we'd be more likely to do what we WANT. Edit: there is no "Both" option. I want you to pick a side and defend it. Certainly there are a ton of us (myself included) that play to the rest of the group. But base your decision on soloing. Don't take the middle ground. That's too easy :P
Why there is no RIGHT answer:
I'd recommend the book Switch by Chip and Dan Heath. Arguing logic doesn't work. You have to motivate the emotional side of an individual to make it really work (in conjunction with logic). Your logic is sound, but you haven't targeted the reason people walk/shoot (completionist) every strike. Some people are just plain having fun. If you could show someone how much more fun it is to run vice walk, you'd swing the community. Unfortunately, that must be felt and experienced. The written word (here) will most likely only apply to logic (unless you're an incredible writer). Logic is just not a strong enough element to do it alone.
Concerning the term: "Efficient" and why it's not an option on my poll.
Most runners are running because of time efficiency. That's probably the right title depending on your operational definition of efficient. One size does not fit all here. "Efficient" is defined by the measurement: Efficient completionists aren't worried about time, but kills instead... Not skipping any enemies. 100% encountered enemies die at their hands. Efficient runners are looking for personal records on strike TIME completion. "Gotta shave 30 seconds off. Skip the stupid colossus and just run by it." It's all in the eye of the beholder. Use this weeks Weekly Heroic as an example. After you activate the console in the public area by the interceptors, do you: A) Fight every enemy in the first big interior chamber and then continue on, also killing every enemy in front of the bosses siege tank (public area)? Efficient mob killer = completionist. Or B) Run and jump past those guys to get to the lieutenant fight (darkness zone), then run and jump to boss area? Efficient TIME completion = runner. Certainly there are those that want to split hairs and kill stuff while they're running through, but killing level 28 cabal majors and ultras takes some freaking time. If you're stopping to down all those dudes you're a completionists.
THIS POLL IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS This is the problem: People fall into 2 real categories. You either want the end of strike rewards only and time is of the essence, or you want to take the scenic route and kill everything on the way. Neither of these practices is bad!!!! Your brain and play style dictate what group you fall into. This does not mean the other group is wrong! They're just different. Understand this and stop taking it personally.
Idling is straight garbage. I don't care about the no-death strike bounties. Participate or get reported. Standing around farming materials and trash mobs also counts as idling no matter how you try to explain it.
So, which group to you fall into? I want this post to stick so everyone understands that there are 2 different schools of thought here and you should try to understand the majority. If 2 people sparrow off, they're runners. If you're a completionist, just quit, or speed ahead, help, and try your luck with a different group. If you sparrow up and the others walk towards the first mob, they obviously want to kill stuff. Quit, or hop off the sparrow and help. Of course no one is holding a gun to your head to be a team player, but team playing requires a "majority rules" mentality. Being the only runner makes you look like a jack ass. Sure, you soloed the boss. But your other 2 "team" members were left behind. It's not good etiquette. I say follow the crowd vice throwing a tantrum that someone isn't playing "your" way. Especially if you're the only one that wants to do it that way. Check left. Check right. Play as a team, OR DONT USE RANDOM MATCHMAKING AND GET MAD WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG! I'm a runner. Ran Sepkis Prime 25 times for Bad Juju, but slowed down when my team mates wanted to. Cheers guys. I did this in fun, but I hope it sticks. There are way too many hate threads about this.

  • I had a guy that rushed right through, and then died to automatically move us up to the next checkpoint. Pissed me right the hell off. He did it twice. 2nd time, me and other guy just started meleeing him and shooting at him for 5 minutes. He got mad and left, and we completed it ourselves no problem. What a douche. #dontrushmebro

    • Being a "completionist" IS the wrong choice. By the time you finish your strike killing every single pointless incredibly low leveled mob out there, you could've beaten at least two strikes if you rushed it. Doesn't matter if you rush or not, you're most likely going to go straight to another one afterwards and spend the same amount of time playing with either style. Why spend an hour to do 3 strikes instead of spending an hour to do 6 or 7 and earning more XP, marks and rewards? It honestly does not make sense to kill the low leveled not required shit. Its way more efficient to keep moving on to the required mobs in ANY way you look at it.

      • To answer your question, I'm a completionist simply because I don't like having the thought in the back of my head that the level 8 dreg that I ran past may be the one to drop a legendary engram. The RNG is a real factor in this game, and I will take as much time as I need to ensure that all possible items I could have received from the strike, are received.

      • I normally would kill most things I see, I occasionally run but I do enjoy watching fallen/cabal heads fly off or the vex exploding with precision shots from my hand cannon

      • Hold the phone, stop right there. The fastest way to get through a strike is if everyone on the fireteam shoots everything in the way. think about it. The more people shooting the more average DPS you are doing and the faster stuff dies. Now i'm not saying that if by shooting and moving forward you get past some mobs that you need to turn around and shoot them too. That is what your teammates are for ;) The first room in the Sepiks Prime strike is a good example. If everyone enters the room guns blazing it takes just as much time to kill everything as it does to walk across the room. I guess my point is this. who cares if you got to the boss 20 seconds before me. You aren't going to do enough damage fast enough to make any real difference in the overall time without my gun helping. So you are better off killing everything.

        • I like to play so will happily kill everything... only time I'm a bad fireteam member is if I have a bounty for a certain strike and I keep getting the wrong ones eventually I will just leave at the start and play it at level 12 :/

        • I am a runner - now that all of my characters are at max level before gear. You gain WAY more XP upon completion of events and bounties that killing EVERYTHING in a strike is a waste of time. I will match what the other players in my group want to do. No matter what, I will wait for them if I have gotten to the next darkness zone without them. The fun in co-op is playing with people.

        • Didn't vote. Because there IS a both. Just like your description, if I load up and hop onto my scooter but others stay and fight mobs, I will get off and fight with them. On other hand, sometimes I am just enjoying myself, fighting through mobs and others scoot off. That's fine, I don't get worked up I clear up and catch up and if they want to run through, then it becomes obvious very quick and I will do the same. I never sit on one side of the fence, my mood, how much time I have dictate how I approach any given strike and that sits secondary to what the other group members want to do.

Total runner. Did nexus last night to get "no deaths in a strike" got 2nd most kills because of the hall with all the goblins I grenade to get through faster. Then I hoped down and cleared minotaurs and started nexus before they jumped down. On the boss I handled most the adds since only 2 of us jumped down and I didnt want a surprise hob goblin to snipe me when I was low Edit: I think people who are 28+ in level 24 tiger strikes who arent runners are wrong. We clearly dont need the engrams and you are wasting everyones time by clearing the entire dungeon. However I do not get mad when I have soloed a boss just for everyone to be catching up as it is dieing

          • I tend to adapt to whatever the others are doing, but in general I prefer to be a runner. The way I see it, there are two reasons for doing a strike: either you have some kind of bounty (complete a strike without dying or kill the boos of that strike) and/or you want to get the rewards at the end. In both cases, it makes sense to get the strike done as quickly as possible and avoid as much conflict as you can (to minimise the chance of death). Obviously, the first few times I did each strike, I played through it fully to experience it. But once you have done it like 30 times, you know exactly what enemies are where and what happens. There's no real thrill or excitement (apart from maybe in a hard boss fight) and all the enemies are the same ones you've faced countless times. There is little point in killing enemies you don't have to. What could you possibly gain from it? Engrams? Well, yeah, but if you complete the strike quickly and move on to the next, you'll probably be killing a similar number of enemies in a given timespan, so your chances of getting engrams is the same. XP? The low level enemies give paltry amounts of that, and really, what's the point once you've passed level 20? Motes of Light are hardly essential. In summary, it is the most logical and efficent thing to do. Like I said, if the others want to take their time, I will stick with them. I won't be that asshole who runs off, dies, and essentially abandons the team. But I don't get any of the hate for people that prefer to run. It just makes the most sense.

            • runners are completionists. they just happen to skip unnecessary content to beat a strike. they still have to do everything that the strike FORCES you to do....

I tend to do whatever the people I'm matched up with are doing though would prefer to run past enemies that I don't have to kill. More strikes completed = more guaranteed rewards, rather than hoping for something from the RNG and wasting your time. If I wanted to farm engrams, I'd do that shit in patrol.

                      • depends on which strike it is. If it's Nightfall or Weekly, I'll speed run it. but if I'm doing Tiger Strikes just to level up my Cryptarch rank, I prefer to go a little slower and kill everything I can see, in case it drops an Engram.

                      • I do a bit of both but probably more on the runner side. Im firing rockets/tossing grenades around too. To take out certain targets along the way. There are a couple strikes i stay up high and snipe that people probly thought i was idle on but i normally get more kills by the end. Winters run and devil walker goalith tank etc. A1 scout rifle and ice breaker do full dmg from far away.

                      • Does it count when my completion runs are only a few minutes slower than my speed runs? If it was like 10-15 minutes then I would speed but in my experience it shaves off like 3 minutes (which I guess is good in the long run but 3 minutes for a lot more chances to get engrams? Yes please)
