Plasma Screen HUD Burn-In

Destiny is console exclusive, which means almost all players play on a television, not a monitor. Many of these players play on plasma screens, millions in fact. The average play session of Destiny is logged by Bungie at 4 hours. I fall around that mark, and that's about all I've used my TV for lately, as I'm sure is the same for many players. This leads to a huge problem, one that may have already permanently damaged my near $3K TV, the HUD is burnt into my display. I'm a very proud owner of the "65in Panasonic VT60, and I paid a very pretty penny for it. Millions of others also playDestiny on plasmas, and the fact is no matter how "worn in" a plasma is, it is still prone to burn-in or image retention. Either can occur after a static image is left on the screen for an extended period of time, like say, playing Destiny for a few hours a day, with no other content appearing on the TV in between. From my recent average playtime, I now have a retained image of the bottom left HUD area burnt in my display; super bar, all 3 weapon slots, among blur where ammo is counted and so on. I left my TV wiping for 12 hours, and the image is still there. (Update 11/19) My TV has been wiping for almost 24 hours, and still has the HUD clearly burned in. (Update 11/20) My TV has been wiping for almost 48 hours straight. The HUD is still there, but instead of a dark gray shadow, it seems to be a tinge of pink. This is a bad sign) There is a simple solution for preventing this, and still being able to enjoy long play sessions. Battlefield 4 got this perfect right off the bat, they added the option to adjust HUD opacity in the video options. This completely stomped the possibility for image retention, and even after hundreds of hours of gameplay I never had a problem. For those who don't know, this option would make it possible to have your HUD slightly see-through so the pixels are being stimulated. This is a very big deal, and has the potential to ruin many plasmas, only from playing Destiny for an average play session, even with days in between. BUNGIE PLEASE, add a simple HUD opacity slider and put all your plasma owners at ease. Love, every Destiny player with a plasma. Please comment to get this noticed.

    • I had a plasma a few years ago & never had a problem with it. I was careful tho, the shop i got it from told me that if i gamed on it the screen would be fine as long as i didnt pause the game or leave the game unattended for extended periods of times. Its when the picture is stationary that the burn can happen. Idk alot about tv,s so im just telling you what the guy told me & i never had a problem. Ive also heard this same thing from other tv outlets that ive bought tv,s from so maybe thats your issue.

        • This is why I don't buy Plasma. It's overpriced and under performs in most cases, compared to LCD I mean.

        • Are plasma screens still being made? Last one that was in my house was my dad's huge plasma TV and it had the playboy bunny logo on the corner of the screen lol. It was thrown out the same time we kicked him out about 18 years ago.

        • Who the hell still buys plasma? LED out classes it in every area. Brighter colors and darker blacks.

          • I have a 65" LED Samsung & have no problems at all. Get yourself a Samsung - I doubt Samsung Plasma TV's would that issue. Samsung makes the best TV's right now, and have been for at least the past 4 years.

              • Everyone knows this can be a problem with plasmas. If you want to play games on a tv lcd or led is the way to go. Sucks but you should've known it could happen

              • As someone that uses a plasma to avoid the negatives of a LCD, I'd like to see options for HUD opacity in destiny.

                • I had exactly the same problem. I stopped playing destiny 3-4 Weeks ago, because the image retention was getting severe. After 2 weeks it was gone. I will not touch the game untill this opacity option will be implemented. I was planning to buy the DLC-s, I'm really glad, that I haven't got the season pass. I really like the content of the upcoming DLC, and I'm sad that I can't play it. It would be a simple option to prevent the image retention, I am almost sure, that Bungie could code this option in about 2-3 hours. They just don't seem to care enough. People already mentioned it after the Beta!!! Nobody wants to take this problem serious. I read several forums about this, the comments are mostly from arrogant fools saying that nobody buys plasma today. It's just sad ...

                • That sucks but unless you're running a patrol or raid for 4+ hours (no loading screen and constant HUD) I don't see how this could really happen. Either way that sucks

                    • I have a plasma and have been gaming with it for about seven years. I have never experienced burn in. I have a Samsung. It's a great tv. If I ever get a hint of anything the tv has burn in protection and features that help the screen. ie, scrolling, white screen, and grey screen. I've never had a problem. A big thing is when you first get a plasma tv don't game on it until you log in about 100 hours of regular use.

                      • How long have you had the TV? This will eventually happen but not as fast as it did unless it is an older TV (Destiny only came out in Sept so that's way to fast). Normally you only see this on TV's stuck on MSNBC or a channel with a bottom slider, etc. Typically Plasma TV's heat up more than LED, so not having it well ventilated may have also contributed....also having the contrast and brightness fully maxed will also speed up burn in.

                        • It will probably not come off your plasma. I have one of the Panasonic plasmas. Amazing picture quality, but ESPN and abc logos burned in during the first 3 months. They are slowly going away a year later (only use it for movies now). I wouldn't play video games on it. I bought LCDs for my consoles and sports. I don't think you would be safe unless there was no hud, no marking of any kind that is continuously displayed. Plasma is going to die off at some point not too far out I think.

                              • Well most of that is your tv. I use a Samsung and I've never had an image burned in..and I've left it on at the menus overnight a few times. Don't buy plasmas. That's the problem.
