Plasma Screen HUD Burn-In

Destiny is console exclusive, which means almost all players play on a television, not a monitor. Many of these players play on plasma screens, millions in fact. The average play session of Destiny is logged by Bungie at 4 hours. I fall around that mark, and that's about all I've used my TV for lately, as I'm sure is the same for many players. This leads to a huge problem, one that may have already permanently damaged my near $3K TV, the HUD is burnt into my display. I'm a very proud owner of the "65in Panasonic VT60, and I paid a very pretty penny for it. Millions of others also playDestiny on plasmas, and the fact is no matter how "worn in" a plasma is, it is still prone to burn-in or image retention. Either can occur after a static image is left on the screen for an extended period of time, like say, playing Destiny for a few hours a day, with no other content appearing on the TV in between. From my recent average playtime, I now have a retained image of the bottom left HUD area burnt in my display; super bar, all 3 weapon slots, among blur where ammo is counted and so on. I left my TV wiping for 12 hours, and the image is still there. (Update 11/19) My TV has been wiping for almost 24 hours, and still has the HUD clearly burned in. (Update 11/20) My TV has been wiping for almost 48 hours straight. The HUD is still there, but instead of a dark gray shadow, it seems to be a tinge of pink. This is a bad sign) There is a simple solution for preventing this, and still being able to enjoy long play sessions. Battlefield 4 got this perfect right off the bat, they added the option to adjust HUD opacity in the video options. This completely stomped the possibility for image retention, and even after hundreds of hours of gameplay I never had a problem. For those who don't know, this option would make it possible to have your HUD slightly see-through so the pixels are being stimulated. This is a very big deal, and has the potential to ruin many plasmas, only from playing Destiny for an average play session, even with days in between. BUNGIE PLEASE, add a simple HUD opacity slider and put all your plasma owners at ease. Love, every Destiny player with a plasma. Please comment to get this noticed.

  • Change to LED, plasma is obsolete technology.

  • The only time comparing a Plasma TV to a LED one is when you are in the store. Get our home and you will never notice a difference or care unless you are some kind of TV snob. $1k will buy you a nice LED and you don't have to worry about the burn in.

I have a 42 inch plasma but its in the bedroom. I game on my 52 LCD that I've had since 2006 (god damn it was expensive). Nice write up though I didn't even think to check if it had a screen wipe or pixel shift function. I got it for 50$ when I naught my bed. I'm about to go check now lol Edit: actually I think I got my Sony bravia in 2008. Solid set

  • You may have spent 3k on it but not in the last 4 or 5 years you haven't. I have a 65" vizio led smart tv that was 1600 it's like 3 years old. Plasma has been dropping since LCD got big and now with led plasma is dead. It's time to upgrade anyway man.

  • Plasma, how quaint! Seriously though, is plasma still a thing in the US or something? Fallen almost completely by the wayside here in favour of LED.

    • That sucks. I prefer led and in a year or so oled. I have an Samsung lcd I purchased something like 6 year ago. It's starting to get a similar issue. It will leave a residual image of smaller objects. They go away if the set it off for a bit. But it's also older and was used a ton. I have a 60 led now that is amazing so it's not a big deal.

    • I use a plasma with Xbox One, and I'm always conscious of burn in. Whenever I go to the bathroom, get a drink, or floating in orbit in party waiting for a raid group, I say "Xbox, Watch TV." It's the perfect screen saver! When I'm ready to go back to Destiny, "Xbox, Go To Destiny." I also switch to TV at least 5 minutes before turning off the console. I'd rather be overly cautious about it than have burn in.

    • From what i remember this was always an issues with plasma. I remember older plasma had the ghosting affect(trailing images). One of the main reason why i never bought one. Of all my gaming buddies(we are an older crowd) none of us went with plasma tv for this reason

      • I bought a 50 inch specter LED for 329 bucks. Pretty good picture & if I wreck it, no big deal. if I spent 3 grand I wouldn't dare risk burning the image in.

      • Having to crank up the brightness in lieu of the Ghost popping a flashlight on command, doesn't help. This doesn't benefit Bungie/Activision so it probably won't happen. Unless you give them another $20, then they'll give you what is included in most games these days.

      • Ouch! Precisely why I got an 56" LCD as they don't tend to get burnt in pictures as easily! & the 56 was coz the 62 cost an extra £800! :)

      • I've been gaming for 5+ years on plasma 3D HDTVs, no issue at all. I played the DCUO MMO on ps3 like it was my job, no burn in. Destiny on PS4 on my newest 3D tv, again, no burn ins. It all depends on if you age(break in) the plasma properly before you use the tv for gaming. I made sure to take the proper steps to age the plasma, then after a few hundred hours of use. (I used a professional plasma tv kit to calibrate both of the tv's, my friend does this for a living and I used his calibration equipment) and then I started to game. As a result, both of our Samsung plasma 3D tv's are fine.

        • Thread is 4 weeks old and you probably found it (or someone pointed that out - I won't read all the comments), but Destiny DOES HAVE HUD opacity "slider" (both horizontal and vertical - whatever you like). Just go to options settings > screen bounds.

5 yr old 60" LG plasma gets residual burn like you would expect but even after over 8 hours still doesn't leave a permanent burn on the screen, but would like an opacity option as well

          • I own a 65" LG Plazma, there is a setting in the Menzies called Game user, which handles the HUD burn pretty well. Not sure if other brands have that option. Slider is a good call though.

              • Lol plasma's haven't cost "a pretty penny" for a few years. It's not Bungie's fault you you played a game on a type of t.v. that's known to be terrible for gaming. Maybe you should of researched your "expensive" equipment before using it?

                • I feel your pain. Years ago, I had the exact same thing happen with my ST50 when I was playing Dragon Age:Origins. I had the health wheel burned into the top left of my plasma screen for months...but it eventually went away. Thats not to say your problem may not be permanent but there is hope with normal TV watching you can reverse the damage. I love my plasma tv; the display is superior in every way to lcd tech...the colors and contrast are insane. If you can let the pixels settle down over the course of time you shouldnt have any more problems...I have heard of plasma owners having problem with Destiny but so far I am having no issues.

So what do you mean your tv was "wiping" for 48 hours with no improvement

Who the hell buys plasma these days? You're just asking for trouble, especially as a gamer. It's literally a newb mistake. LED all the way.

                  • That's what you get for buying plasma. It's not Bungie's fault your television is burned, it's your fault.
