Hello, Flood (and hopefully Ninjas). Last night, I conducted a little social experiment in #Destiny. The purpose of which was to test how effective Bungie.net's moderation policy is. Before I get too far into this, let me get a few things out of the way first.
#1: To those who might say I am only making this thread because I'm salty about getting punished, please don't. I went into this situation hoping to get banned, or at least warned. I am happy to report "Mission accomplished" on that front. I now know that the "Report" function works. Or, it works whenever the Moderators decide they want it to work. The purpose of this thread is to constructively criticize the Bungie.net Forum Moderation Team so that they may better help us (the community).
I certainly hope they don't take this as anything but constructive. It is not my intention to insult, flame or otherwise make derogatory comments towards them.
#2: If you strongly believe that Forum Ninja's are perfect, and can do no wrong... please leave this thread. I am about to criticize them.
So, lately Forum Ninja's have been getting a pretty bad reputation amongst the Flood. Claims have been made against them that they are biased towards new members of the forum (those who joined to play Destiny, or "NewFomans"). In the past, I tried to defend them as best as I could. I strongly believed that they were doing the best that they could, given the recent population explosion. But I began to get a little worried as the accusations against them refused to cease. So, as I try to be as unbiased as possible, I decided to run a little experiment before trying to defend them further.
What I discovered was absolutely disappointing.
I went into #Destiny with the intention of getting banned, and testing how biased or unbiased Forum Ninja's were. I wanted to see how effective they were at their duties (I don't want to say 'jobs' because they don't get paid to moderate). So, I intentionally baited #Destiny with controversial posts in hopes of getting one of them to Report me. It worked. I wasn't expecting a certain user to take it as far as he did, but whatever. You can view the thread here if you wish. (Let me know if the link doesn't work.)
I was immediately bombarded with insults ranging from cracks about my penis size, to my mother being called a whore. I intentionally held back on reporting that user to see if a Forum Moderator would come investigating the rest of the thread (instead of banning/warning me for the Report filed against me and then immediately leaving).
They did not. As of this posting, that user still has not received punishment (you can tell if they have or not by looking at their post. If it has the 'I violated CoC blah blah blah' message or not).
I would like to know why. I think that's a reasonable request. I was under the impression that the "Report" button was to bring attention to a thread that had violations of the CoC and that a Ninja should investigate it. Am I wrong? Please be transparent about this.
My memory isn't the best, but I don't remember Moderation being this.... (I don't want to say unfair) lax during the Halo 3 and Halo: Reach population explosions. What changed? Were you told to relax on moderating newer members? Why was this person not punished for calling my mother a whore?
As I said before, the purpose for this experiment was to test how effective Ninjas are and the purpose of this thread is to get some transparency on how Ninjas moderate. Thank you for reading.

Edited by JBSpudster: 10/17/2014 9:24:14 AMWhat you are about to read is coming from one of the newest Forum Ninjas, so take it with a grain of salt. The details aren't that important, but a single report isn't going to notify us of a potential CoC violation, and that's by design. Accruing the reports necessary to reach that threshold takes time, essentially dependent upon how badly the community wants to see it met with Ninja Justice. I hate to resort to the blanket statement, "The report button works better when more people use it", but it's entirely true. There is no bias towards newer members. If you break the CoC, you are subject to being punished. The CoC has been streamlined as per popular demand before Bungie.next. We asked for self moderation tools / more laid back rules, and that's exactly what we got. Comparing the management of Destiny's "Population Explosion" to that of Halo 3's or Halo Reach's is like comparing apples to oranges. So many things are different now, a lot of old moderating methods and practices are outdated and unnecessary. One vital moderating component that remains is the fact that we can't see everything without the help from the community, especially during these very busy days. It will likely stay this way for a long time, please don't confuse a delayed response with an ulterior motive on our part. I don't want to to speak on behalf of my fellow moderators, but If you want a more direct response from me, I always welcome PMs about CoC violations. Believe it or not, we do care about the community. I know I wouldn't have volunteered to do this if I didn't. <3 P.S. I'd move this to #Community, since that's where it would belong, but in the interest of transparency I doubt that would help this thread's visibility... That's a whole other issue that the Web Team is aware of and working on.

I violated the Code of Conduct and was met with Ninja Justice.

Moderation and the entire structure of this site is not the same as it was when Reach was around. Adapt.
-
The rules have changed, everything is far too relaxed now. Back on the old site I was warned just for posting a thread in the wrong forum.. It needs to get stricter again if we have any chance of survival. The ninjas don't make the rules, Bungie does.

bump for ninja response.

The only acceptable way to call someone's mother a whore is if they have an outrageous accent, are French, and possess a holy grail. A very nice grail, at that.
