I think i know what the darkness is. Now, why do i think this? Well, i'm an interactive animation student and in my spare time i like to watch gdc (game developer conference) presentations, to expend my knowledge and learn new things.There is this really nice 1 hour presentation about destiny's production design. Now, pay close attention to the slides in the presentation at 24:00 and the slide at 31:15. It is really funny how no one in the community picked up on this.

Well we now can pretty much guess why Joe Staten left; he says "I know what your thinking, this is starting to look like an MMO. Well it's not -- it's a Bungie Action Shooter...". Having worked with Creatives in ad shops I can totally see him leaving when higher ups force him to go away from his action shooter/non-MMO vision into a full MMO landscape.

Cool find! You may be right, but this may also be another race and not the Darkness itself. Although I agree that the ships at 24:00 are very dark (mattery). Can you go a bit more into why you think that other race is the darkness itself?

The pyramid ships have black mist escaping the bottom and the yellow race postcard has a bunch of triangles with black mist on the side

He was probably referring to the large dark mist/cloud all the way to the right at 31:15. It is a little suspect.
