Why do so many guys play as female characters?

It's so confusing when someone joins a fireteam with a female character and ends up being a dude (*cue Aerosmith*). Do they all just want the D? But seriously, can any guys who do this shed some light on.. why? I feel like someone pulled an Oprah, "You get a female warlock, and YOU get a female warlock! Everyone gets female warlocks!" Edit: Jesus H. Christopher, I'm curious. I've noticed this quite often since I started playing, and I can't answer this question for myself, so I wanted some insight. inb4more "why do you even caaaaare?!!1!?!?" Edit again: holy -blam!-, I'm a girl. Hence why I don't have insight to why this happens. Edit, take three: thanks to everyone who gave a legitimate answer! I appreciate the insight :-)

It's as simple as this. Many male gamers are isolated from society and live in mommy's basement with no chance of real female interaction so they use the lame excuse "I'd rather stare at a females ass while I play" because they know they're pathetic in real life. Creating a female character is the closest they will get to the opposite sex. Either that or they envision themselves as females and creating a female character will help them achieve their desire to be a chick. I play as males for the simple fact I'm a guy and I imagine myself playing through these amazing worlds and triumphing over the obstacles it provides. But then again I have a wife and am not pathetic enough to masturbate to a made up female game character......unless it's Lara Croft everybody has to get off to Lara. Lmfaaooo Edit: on a serious note, 90% have this mentality the other 10% have legit reasons to run a female character. Examples would be they have a gf, wife who also plays so they have her character on their profile, or they run a female character to see if a female character reacts differently in the story mode. Most people can't take truth that's why they prefer people who are politically correct. I'm sure I'll get hate mail for this but I really don't give two f***s. I've met countless perverts and losers in the gaming world who run chick characters for reasons mentioned above. Guys if u don't like my answer too bad....put the lotion away and go meet real chicks.

    • Varies with the game and class. In rift a female dwarf was tiny and hard to see so made sense for pvp. On destiny it's really about armor appearance for the wife and I. Lot of the stuff made my male characters look overweight almost. She made a male to look bigger I did the opposite.

    • I have a female hunter cos I think it looks better with the armour a D shader whereas the male one didn't really look like a hunter

        • Why do guys like to play as male characters? Are they attracted to people of the same sex?

          • Because warlock robes look weird on the male models. That's my excuse for this game anyway. In Dead Island I played as a woman because she had the perks I liked. In the Souls games I play as a woman because smaller hit boxes, I mean, the hit boxes probably aren't smaller but they feel smaller because slimmer looking character. Fallout I play as a woman because Black Widow and Cherchez La Femme. Either way it's pretty much irrelevant unless there are bonuses for being either gender.

          • This shouldn't even be a thing. Who cares!!! Make a male or female. Doesn't matter. Stop reading into shit that is irrelevant

          • Because they can. That's it, nothing else. Although the claims of a smaller hitbox on female toons is absurd.

          • I do it because it's the opposite of me. I can be anyone in a video game, why would I want to be myself? I want my character to be the complete opposite of myself in real life, hence, female.

            • I've always played as females when I can create my character. I dunno, maybe cuz there aren't enough female leads and it sort of helps to even out the balance.

            • This old thread again? Samus Aran, Lt. Ellen Ripley, Furiosa, etc. We like heroines. Strong women with interesting back story. They cut a nice figure, too. Your character you are playing in a game don't always have to be your avatar. That's another reason you get 3.

I feel like my characters need variety. I have 2 male characters and 1 female characters, and i feel like that is alright and we shouldnt have to choose our same sex of our characters as we are in real life.

            • My main is a female Exo Warlock and I'm a bloke. I chose female because I like the face shapes and the stance in the inventory screen. Although I'm male, I don't need to play as a male character. She's not me, but she's a character that I've chosen to identify as when I play destiny. Maybe some males choose female characters because they want to look at their bums in 3rd person, but I think the main reason is that you're creating a character. A character doesn't have to mirror your real life self.

            • I modeled my characters after the Vanguard when I first made alternate classes. I think alot of people play as female characters because they think the hitboxes on them are smaller.

            • I've always made or picked guy characters in every game I ever played. So I based of my Hunter as myself since I main it, and made a female titan and warlock. I had a male titan but the poe gear was too bulky and I just didn't like that

            • This game doesn't have a role playing element, nor can people give you free stuff. I chose the female model for my second character for some diversity. I liked the way she looked.

            • I've seen many threads on this and gist of it usually comes down to "I don't want to stare at a guy's ass all day" (though this applies less to Destiny because it's more FPS outside of the Tower or using a Sword). Sometimes they get called perverts. They usually respond with "Well, at least I don't try to identify with a fictional character". Frankly, both arguments are idiotic. Play what you want to play. It's a game. We're here to have fun and not judge people. I'm a guy, so I gravitate towards playing male characters, especially if the gameplay is the same, but I have no problems playing a female character if they have unique gameplay, like the Siren in Borderlands.
