Why do so many guys play as female characters?

It's so confusing when someone joins a fireteam with a female character and ends up being a dude (*cue Aerosmith*). Do they all just want the D? But seriously, can any guys who do this shed some light on.. why? I feel like someone pulled an Oprah, "You get a female warlock, and YOU get a female warlock! Everyone gets female warlocks!" Edit: Jesus H. Christopher, I'm curious. I've noticed this quite often since I started playing, and I can't answer this question for myself, so I wanted some insight. inb4more "why do you even caaaaare?!!1!?!?" Edit again: holy -blam!-, I'm a girl. Hence why I don't have insight to why this happens. Edit, take three: thanks to everyone who gave a legitimate answer! I appreciate the insight :-)

Why so homophobic, bruh? Google Freud's theories on that... Anyway, I play as a female out of habit. I mostly play 3rd person RPGs that offer 100s of hours of gameplay. I'd rather spend that time looking at Khaleesi than I would Khal Drogo. In other games like Mass Effect, Femshep's voice actress does a phenomenonal job, whereas Broshep's voice actor is friggin awful. And this game has no beards. Male heroes have beards -- just look at Jesus, Lincoln and the guys from ZZ Top. Judge not lest Ye be judged, home slice.

      • Because I don't like staring at dude ass every time I'm in the Tower. I spend a good enough time in the Tower, and while I'm in there I'd rather be looking at the sexy backside of a female rather than a bulky dude. Just saying. Also I've been a girl in every video game possible since Pokemon Crystal.

          • Um, maybe it's because we want diversity. Males play FemShep in Mass Effect a lot because they want something new. I have a female Warlock as a second character, so what? Nobody cares what gender somebody plays in a game because of personal preference.

          • I first made a male Exo warlock, then a male human Titan, then a female awoken hunter. Why? You ask. Because I have a girlfriend who will occasionally play on my alt.

          • Because neither I nor anyone else can have sex with my character, it doesn't especially matter one way or another? This common thread of "guys can only play as guy characters / you don't? / my mind asplode" was old decades ago. My reason was the female Exo sounded less annoying than the male. Those few, very few times, the character says anything at all--- at least this way my teeth are not set on edge.

          • Hmm I originally asked the same question and was met with good responses even though I was quite rude Really, in the end I suppose it does not matter which gender you pick as long as you have fun, I have 3 male characters but was thinking of deleting my Warlock and making him a her, maybe with some white hair and sexy eyeballs The only thing that annoys me with this game is the inability to take off your helmet, I wish Bungie would address this, at least let us know if they can or can't do it

            • I create female or male characters depending on what character(s) I am developinf in my books at the time. Often that happens to be female characters because it makes it easier for me to create their personality. Others have various reason, some as simple as preference, others duw to the hit box theory and some purely because its more visually appealing for them. I can't see why it should matter though. If people are getting confused by this or its bothering them then simply put, they are either a little immature (though not meant in an insulting sense) or part of the problem when it comes to gamers who happen to be female. Gamers are gamers after all.

Its simple. Because why not? Every game since I can remember playing video games 95% of the time featured a male protagonist. As this feature became more accessible in modern games, I choose the female character. Because I like to change it up. A female badass is entriguing and more interesting to me then the typical brute male smashing faces. It also depends on the game, and the character models. I liked the female this time around. So what.

            • Depends on the Class i think. I have a female Warlock because the Armor looks way better. But i would'nt Play a female Titan Lol

            • I just like to change it up every now and then. My primary is a male warlock, but my alt is a female titan.

            • For many guys, women are more aesthetically pleasing then men, and since the only affect the character model has is aesthetics, they pick the one they think looks better - the female one. As for me, I am biologically male, but identify as female, and for lots of reasons I won't get into here, actually transitioning is not an option for me. (And even if I did, my voice would still be a baritone, which really sucks). So in games where I have the option, I play female characters.

First off I don't even notice the gender of people's characters. The differences are so trivial. Second there is a standing myth of a smaller hit box due to a smaller frame. Even if this is true the difference is small. Thirdly I myself played a male character on destiny, but typically with MMO games it's not first person. If I'm going to be staring at a characters ass for hours, then I'd rather that ass be a female. Even if it's just cartoon. Edit: also the gear does look better on a warlock female vs a male.

I have a male titan and hunter and a female warlock . . . when I rolled up the warlock, a female human was just what felt right for how I imagined the character that was in my head. Honestly, how is it any different from playing as an Exo or an Awoken, when we are all human?

              • Because there's still some freedom left in the world lol. A more interesting question would have been why so many rock the female locks but play male exos and humans on their other toons. Are the locks just all that?
