Why do so many guys play as female characters?
It's so confusing when someone joins a fireteam with a female character and ends up being a dude (*cue Aerosmith*).
Do they all just want the D? But seriously, can any guys who do this shed some light on.. why?
I feel like someone pulled an Oprah, "You get a female warlock, and YOU get a female warlock! Everyone gets female warlocks!"
Edit: Jesus H. Christopher, I'm curious. I've noticed this quite often since I started playing, and I can't answer this question for myself, so I wanted some insight. inb4more "why do you even caaaaare?!!1!?!?"
Edit again: holy -blam!-, I'm a girl. Hence why I don't have insight to why this happens.

It's extremely easy. Sex envy- Guys who wish they were girls. My buddy plays girl characters all the time, and we've asked him for years, and when we all bring it up he just says he wants something nice to look at while he plays. We all know he secretly wants to be a woman, obviously.

The female hunter looks wayyyy better than the male hunter cause he looks too bulky. I haven't seen the warlocks and their gender differences. The only class that looks good as a male is a Titan since the female looks too lanky for a Titan.

It varies for everyone. I prefer the female Hunter, so I'd gone that route. Couldn't stand the female Titan look, so I knew that my Titan would be a male. Was indifferent on the Warlock, so I went male there too.

I'm a guy in real life but female in games, as I can relate to females more then males (no i'm not gay get over it) if anyone has a problem with me playing a girl character or being named LostPuddyTat that's fine, I don't need them as a friend, I may not have to many friends but the few I have are good friends ^.^

Actually, I picked up on the habit due to 3rd person games. Kingdoms of Amalur as a recent example. Basically, why stare at the back of a dude for hours on end? How about a little eye candy to go with my adrenaline?

Everyone has their reason. Some people like a female protagonist, some people just want to pretend to be a female. Me, it depends on the class. I use a male for the warlock and Titan, but a female for the hunter. I just feel that a female hunter/assassin is better, while a male fits better for a "warlock" and a big, though, physical class.

To add to your confusion: I play a male exo titan, a female human hunter and am still not decided if my awoken warlock will be male or female. Why? Because I can.

I have a male lock a female hunter and a female Titan. Why? My daughter wanted to design them. I thought why not the females are smaller so maybe harder to hit. Also thought going by human nature that without a mic the blokes think your a chick so they play harder lol they don't want to be shown up by a girl haha!

I made my titan a woman because I think it's funny how small they are compared to the male titans they look like you could snap them in 2 but turns out they can crush your skull

Is there a bad reason for liking females? I prefer the sounds they make compared to a guy. But my ultimate reason is because women will always look better than a guy... To me at least... Game or IRL. So why not get to look at a woman all the time when you play? :P

Please, keep in mind that I simply do not care what anyone's personal opinion is on this matter. I'm writing this in hopes that it may inspire someone to open their mind and stop making assumptions without first considering several different influences that may cause another person to make the choices they make. In my case, I first created a female awoken character in the destiny beta for the following reasons. First off, I wanted to explore the mechanics of the game and choose a variety of customizable options on each of my three distinctively different Guardians. Secondly, being a fan of Bungie's work for many years, I thought it would be interesting and comical to create a Guardian that resembles Cortana; a character brought to life by the studio in the Halo games. My third and final reason? Well frankly, to make people like the OP have a conniption in complete utter confusion on why the world is unique. I created the same exact Guardian when the full game was released. Because I felt like it.

i make female characters in games based a background i've made up for them. it's somewhat RPGish in my head but it is what it is. all my characters (male/female) have a backstory or just a reference to why i created them that gender.

If you're really a girl then you should not have an issue with this. Haven't you ever played a game where you controlled a male character before? I've explained this many times before on Bungie.net ( this site seems to be the only one in the world where this a big deal ). For me this is a tradition that goes back to my Phantasy Star Online days. The male characters had attack animations that left them open to counterattacks, the female characters did not. The female characters also had better stats so for 4 straight years I played a game where I exclusively used a female avatar instead of a male one. After a while it just became normal to try out a female Avatar before I did a male one. In Destiny I find that the male characters look short and stocky ( especially the male Titan ) and most of the male hairstyles are silly. I'm much happier with the overall appearance of the female Guardians. When I created a Male Titan in the Beta, every time I saw him in the tower I was overcome with a strong desire to delete him since I was never happy with how he turned out. That's all there is to it, aesthetics.

Sometimes it's all about appreciating the aesthetics. Sometimes it's about the headcannon backstory for the character. Sometimes it's a subconscious desire for emotional attachment. Sometimes it's just harmless fun. Why not be a female for a change? To put it in perspective. You have the option of playing as a female character. Why would you choose to play a a male character if you have the option to play the gender you most identify with?

Plus I like laughing at male characters who walk up to my female ones and dance with me... if only you knew. Edit: Why don't you play as a male?

If I can't find a character to look like me I usually pick a female who looks fine. But in this game the female looks like me more than the overly muscular males.

Normally your staring at the back end of your character for hours on end. What would you wanna stare at? Being that's null here, just habit by now. But when one race / sex feels right i try and match class to gender. IE : my male Exo Titan ...
