Why do so many guys play as female characters?

It's so confusing when someone joins a fireteam with a female character and ends up being a dude (*cue Aerosmith*). Do they all just want the D? But seriously, can any guys who do this shed some light on.. why? I feel like someone pulled an Oprah, "You get a female warlock, and YOU get a female warlock! Everyone gets female warlocks!" Edit: Jesus H. Christopher, I'm curious. I've noticed this quite often since I started playing, and I can't answer this question for myself, so I wanted some insight. inb4more "why do you even caaaaare?!!1!?!?" Edit again: holy -blam!-, I'm a girl. Hence why I don't have insight to why this happens. Edit, take three: thanks to everyone who gave a legitimate answer! I appreciate the insight :-)

  • Because one simple reason i rather look at a female character every time i am in the tower or open my menu. Done the same in games like mass effect hell even Diablo. (pardon the pun) any guy that claims to be strait and then questions why another man rather looks at a female body should have a word with themselves. Now in not some little puberty plagued teen i am actually married and have a little daughter and even my wife understands the reasons behind my female character choice even if she herself rather pick female characters for herself.

  • No matter what game I play I usually gravitate towards female characters. The idea of this bad ass female wading knee deep in the blood of her enemies, laughing manically while she slaughters whole enemy armies is far more bad ass in my mind than the usual generic dude saves the Galaxy because generic. Also the Exo Stranger made me want to reroll a female Exo Hunter because holy shit I love her armor. Needs to be in game asap

Because i started playing rpgs in the 80's and there was no option. Its nice to have a different take on the world you are playing in. I like to play both as good developers these days have different things happen based on gender. I enjoyed playing a female in mass effect And dragon age the most. Often i would also make the female look like the girl i was dating, they were usually flattered lol.

    • Hi, there. I'll politely answer your question. Normally, I avoid being a female character at all costs. I have three characters, and two are male. I tried to make a character of all races and classes. However, I really wanted an Awoken warlock. When I tried to make him... He just turned out to look really gay. I didn't like it. So, I just decided to make a female warlock instead. Turned out to look way less dumb, so I just went with it. I didn't want to do that initially, but now I have a badass looking female warlock. So, I guess I can't complain.

    • I can see why people would gender swap in games but personally I don't

    • I have a female hunter mostly because I felt that the male hunter seemed a bit too stocky for my idea of the stealthy badass. That and the fact that i prefer to make characters that are quite different to myself, i find that if i make a character who's supposed to the 'me' of this story, they can get tied down by things like 'they should probably look like i do' or 'they should probably have the same tastes as me' whereas i find it much more fun for immersions sake to make a character who is somebody i'm NOT, so i'm free to create who they ARE.

    • Because they are total -blam!-ing basement jocks with no chance in hell of hearing the real thing moan, except through certain sites on the internet. Hence they get some sort of kick, Nah closure thinking what they are looking at on screen is actually their real life girffriend.

Means i ended up wit 2 females and 1 male this game, really wish they would give even slot my ocd does not like odd lol Fun fact playing a different gender char is being coined as crossdressing in many rpg communities no idea why lol

      • Who cares if its a dude or a chick? Assuming someone wants the D simply because they created a female character is just naive and makes you look like a homophob. Why is my main a female? Because I've played too many games where the name I wanted was taken, so I' reuse the randomized names WoW gave me years ago. To this day I reuse WoW names, both male and female, simply because I can and for no other reason.

      • My main is a Titan. I saw a screenshot before I started playing with a female titan in full end game gear and just thought it looked cooler than the male did. Sometimes I regret it, but female Titans are more rare so most of the time I'm happy with my decision. Just got chatterwhite last night and now I just think my girl looks super cool!

      • To be honest I'm still trying to figure out why there is a character creator, as we only get to see our guardian unmasked during the tower and a few cutscenes, they probably should of just stuck with the faceless hero gambit that set them right to begin with.

        • Personally, I always make female characters, or at least one of them, in games that give you such choices, but particularly in RPGs. And yes, that includes shooters with RPG elements. Simply put, I just find it more interesting in a lot of ways. Sometimes you just get bored of rocking yet another bland, macho male character, you know. When other games force you to play as a male, either because of story driven elements or lazy game design, for more than half your life, you'll start finding the female options can be more pleasing. This is assuming the character creation isn't absolute shit like Fallout 3 and GTA:V.

          • Honestly I usually don't but i thought the chick looked cooler and also I usually am just meh at pvp and I was hoping the smaller character model might help slightly even if psychologically.

          • Because I don't view my guardian as an extension of myself but as a character whom I created and am filling in the lore for.

          • Why are there so many guys trying to defend their decision in the comments? It's a simple question, not an insult. You don't need to defend your sexuality if it hasn't been questioned. :P

Pervs. Any excuse is invalid and probably warrants some sort of psychological counseling on objectifying or even gender confusion
