Companion App or Real Problem?

So my companion app isn't showing any of my characters and is saying I haven't played Destiny. I have no way to play the game right now and was wondering what the problem is.

Destiny is down at the moment for maintenance. The servers are down to apply the patch. The servers hold your character data, so no characters til they're back up

I think it has to do with today's hot fix. Services will be suspended for a couple hours. be patient
