All we do now is read literature and write about it. If I want to go into architecture, HOW DOES A FOUR PAGE ESSAY ON A TALE OF TWO CITIES HELP ME?!?!?!?!?!
Seriously, I have done almost nothing as far as grammar is concerned since middle school, so what's the point? Should high school English classes be optional? Sure, I'm pretty good at the class, I just find it to be very boring and obnoxious.
What do you guys think?

The ability to decipher language is paramount.

Imagine if current mainstream musicians had finished highschool and gotten a decent education. We'd have better music and younger generations wouldn't be so autistic.
-
I'm in online school suck it lol

Becuz, my writing teach is a -blam!-in' 60 yr old chick with a giant ass, not andocando nice ass, I'm talking bout "EEEEWWWWWW! THATS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T DO THE SQUATS!" ass, and she gave us a test where we had to answer questions about her, and it was a grade that counted as 20% of our grade -_- HONESTLY, I do not give 2 fat flying -blam!-s if I fail english class.

Because a portion of people in the U.S. are illiterate

Edited by Failure4Life: 10/5/2014 12:27:34 AMThought of expanding your vocabulary broken at the foundation. The purpose of language is to communicate thoughts and using words that hamper that singular goal renders language useless. Word choice as a sign of class is a crooked thought process at best. English is very helpful in terms of basic grammar and spelling(I broke a few rules here myself) but after that it's usefulness dwindles.
-
Because some people still don't know how to read by high school.

You're username is a good reason

>implying that English isn't the mathematics of language

Edited by SSDxCrunchyWolf: 10/5/2014 12:02:54 AMMaybe your school just gives out bad education.

Well by improving your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar when it comes to writing job applications or CV's you'll look a lot smarter and professional. Plus if you've took other classes it'll help you get better grades by using more sophisticated language.
-
Reason #1: You used "gimme". Seriously friend, if you can't communicate effectively and professionally, all your architectural knowledge won't mean a thing. Pay attention and work hard in all your classes if you want to be a well-rounded individual.
-
It gets you to expand your vocabulary, read classical books, and learn how to structure a story properly.

Once you reach tenth grade, English just becomes a literature class. Plus, essay writing no longer becomes limited to just that subject. History and science courses, especially at higher levels, can become very demanding of writing. Sometimes one might even need to do a report in stats. I've done much more essay writing in AP US history than I have in three years of high school English. Personally, I believe that students should be able to waive out of English in twelfth grade after taking some opt-out test.

Maybe so we won't have to hear lyrics like "we want nothing from nobody".
-
English class is made to help practice writing. The meaning of the essays themselves are very pointless, but the only reason they have you do it is so you can write more coherently, with minimal grammatical errors. Reason being is because school is one of the only places they can force you to write, as most people choose not to write outside of school, not developing any writing skills. Not saying that you have that issue at all. I'm only stating my feelings towards English class.
-
I remember in grade 11 I constantly had to correct my english teachers spelling and grammar, I've also learned way more about the english language since I left school. And yes essays and what not seem rather pointless, the whole class is just filler really. So yea, I really don't see any reason we should have to take english classes, especially considering that, in Australia at least, we're being educated by idiots.

I believe that your logic is undeniable and that any sane person would have english as an optional subject. I wish you only success and happiness in the future.
-
The second Samuel l Jackson points a gun to your head, you're going to wish you took it seriously.
-
Because it's good to have a general knowledge of things and people think you're smart when you toss out quotes from Shakespeare.
-
Because knowing only that which pertains to your field is worthless in the scheme of things. The average person changes their college major at least 3 times, and careers 5 times.
-
My guess would be that an interviewer for said dream job would not hire a person if their resume looks like this: Joe Schmo I lyke comp an stuf HS graduate Great with multi task You're guy for this position .....then again, that is how a resume would be written if all levels of English curriculum would not exist.
-
You learn to bullshit. Who doesn't need to bullshit?
-
I think people might have misread. They are mainly saying why it isn't worthless when you ask them to rebuttal it rather than agree with it.
-
It is merely a class trying to make sense of senseless language. I mean seriously why on earth does it matter if I use who or whom if they both mean the same exact thing.
