Scout rifles...useless?

I noticed that the scout rifle seems to do pretty much exactly the same damage as the auto rifle, per shot, in th same level range. To me, this seems like it completely eliminates the point of having a single shot, low mag size rifle. The scout rifle should be doing more damage than an auto, because of the fact it has a smaller mag and way slower ROF. In the current game, scout rifles are junk. Just a small buff to their damage would make them a much more viable weapon, and give a reason to choose one over an auto rifle. Please buff them. Just a little.

  • Yes you want high damage bit the real clincher is the impact stat. Didn't matter what weapons you're wanting to use. That needs to be as high as possible. The higher the firing rate the lower the impact will be, but it balances out. So the semi auto scout rifle will far outstrip the auto per shot, but the auto will obviously get more rounds down range faster. Hope that helped.

    • They definitely do not do the same damage as an auto rifle. I think your confusion is coming from the menu screen. You could have an auto rifle and scout rifle that each are at say, 100 damage. But the auto rifle only does 65 critical damage while the scout rifle does 150 critical damage on the same enemy. Bungie put in the 100 damage in the menu screen so you can quickly gauge the damage difference between two different weapon types.

      • Ok so obviously they can't nerf the autos again, due to the outrage I am sure that would cause, so why not buff the scout rifles? I don't see your point. Regardless of 'what it is', it needs to be addressed with either the autos being nerfed or the scout being buffed. Agreed?

      • Honestly, you and I are not far enough along in the game to know how good or bad these weapon types will be later on. I've tried each of the weapon types and they're way more balanced than they were during beta. Hopefully that will translate well to the endgame.

        • The only damage that counts is precision damage. The only kills that matter, are precision kills. Always try to improve your precision kills. In this regard the scout rifle and hand cannons are the ultimate tools. The alien that you might unload a clip into can be dispatched with a bullet or two, from an excellent scout rifle. In the time it takes you to drop two or three, I could have dropped almost twice as many. If your numbers are not yellow, it does not matter what damage you are dealing, because it is not enough!

          • Socio rifles do way more damage on head shots. If you're doing body shots then yea an auto rifle will be better, but scouts do hella high crit damage.

          • The maps in the full game have completely ruined the balance the beta had. The beta maps catered to the Scout, Auto, Shotgun and Sniper and now the only guns that are usable are the Auto and Shotgun. I'd go as far as saying Bungie have completely dropped the ball and ruined their game beyond repair. Considering the Campaign is also utter shit what exactly have Bungie done right with this game?

I absolutely agree. The scout rifles were an excellent baseline for semi-auto weapons in the beta. In theory they were as powerful as AR's, in practice it was counter-balanced by the fact simple weaving would cause a 30-40% miss rate due to semi-auto. I was VERY surprised to see a massive nerf to them at launch. (not only was the impact nerfed, the 80 impact scouts that were the only useful ones had their impact HALVED) While they're not as dinky as hand-cannons were in beta, they're still lacking punch to compensate for their semi-auto state. The worst part is the way this impacts PVE strike balance. They completely filled that gate hacking portion of Devil's Lair with these guys who perch in nests with fusion rifles and utterly NAIL YOU for 80% of your hp from across the map. The scout rifles were the fastest way to deal with them, now they're useless for that purpose and it makes that area 5x harder. As an aside, I'm liking the new hand cannon... they finally pack a punch that makes their small mag size and low fire rate worth it. I just hope Bungie doesn't cater to n00bs who let someone with an HC aim a head shot and nerf it back to uselessness.

              • You can easily single shot the the auto rifle as i found the scout under powered as well....just a quick tap on the trigger.

              • Scouts do more crit damage than auto so you have to make head shots to make them worth it

                • Don't feel like they are underpowered at all I have been using a about since the beta and I don't really have any complaints except maybe for ammo count which I solved by having armor that speeds my reload

                  • Less recoil on scout compared to auto and easier to conserve ammo..
