Not that I really care much and understand the practical reasons, but I got to thinking in beta, why does a mechanical "person" who doesn't breath need the helmet, or even just why for protection when the helmet is the same looking material as their heads.
Again, I'm not bitching, I totally get it's just programming continuity across the races, but I do chuckle thinking about the absurdity.

If nothing else, it would be to protect their optics (or eyes) or auditory sensors (ears). Their entire face may be made of metal, however the ears would be made of a thinner, probably dampening material that would better collect sound and the eyes would be cameras with flimsy lenses. Can't risk damaging this all-important hardware. Can't very well complete a mission if you can't see or hear your surroundings..
