Are you kidding me?! In the U.S the wage gap between women and men is .71 cents per every dollar a man makes. Children are the future, women aren't being "paid to do nothing". They are literally birthing the work force of the future that will replace us once we reach retirement age just as we are replacing the baby boomers. The last thing we want to do is end up with a negative population ration like japan and the rest of the industrialized world. Without a continuation of workforce numbers the economy will slow as the population ages, eventually it may even stop and the civilization that had existed will die. On the note of pregnancy itself it is an arduous process and can put significant strain on a woman's body. It isn't 9 months of kicking back and playing -blam!-ing xbox. It is 9 months of watching what you eat, what medicines you take, focusing on your health and the baby. Not to mention the bloating, heart burn, acid reflux, urinary leakage, vomiting and nausea. That doesn't even cover birth. I am 100% on board for fathers having paternity leave to stay at home with newborn babes. What I'm not on board with is this ignorant bitching over something you don't even seem to understand.
the US actually has the least amount of maturity leave for new parents in the entire industrialized world.
• My bad, I didn't catch that. Even still, this isn't "ignorant bitching". This is about work and wages.

which is why I explained pregnancy is essentially an investment in the future work force and an investment in the continuation of the current civilization/society. While it doesn't have immediate returns it does have long term effects. Both men and women should be equally involved in family life, work should be split to be fair and allow both parents a fair share of family time. Both parents should get paternity and maternity leave. And just because someone is on paternity or maternity leave doesn't meant they're being an unproductive slouch they could be doing other things to contribute other than tending to the familial brood

  • If you're so adamantly in favor of maintaining paid maternity leave, what's stopping your from favoring paid paternal leave?

  •
.71 cents per every dollar a man makes.
Every time someone makes this argument, it's a different number. Sometimes it's 71 cents. Sometimes it's 84 cents. Sometimes 81. Sometimes 92.

  • The wage gap has almost entirely been debunked.

  • Why can't people just check the wages to settle this wage gap argument?

  •
Are you kidding me?! In the U.S the wage gap between women and men is .71 cents per every dollar a man makes.
This statistic is farce. It's based on the assumption that men and women are evenly distributed throughout the job market. Men tend to pursue careers in science/engineering while women tend to pursue careers in civil duties (teachers, librarians, etc.) and humanities. Of course men are going to be paid more.

  • Alright, it's really more of a diverse spectrum. In my age group it's closer to 93% equivalency in wage. Don't even get me started on the labor market distribution. It is a very large and complex issue, take nursing for example. A mostly female dominated career, a male nurse will always make more than female nurses and will always be promoted faster. This is a process that has been observed called the glass escalator. But in the reverse a female engineer while being a token is offend viewed as not as competent or as knowledgable as her male counter parts even when she may actually be smarter or more capable. Teaching used to be one of the most prestigious and highly paid jobs in the united stated but once the majority of teachers became women the wage was driven down. I don't think it is merely life choices which are often sited as a main reason for wage differences. It is the fact that we don't have any egalitarianism or equality in the work environment as a whole. Also you can blame socialization of children while you're at it. I didn't want to delve into the entire issue because a forum isn't the best format to do that.
