So Esports. They are probably the most controversial thing to happen in the gaming community in like a decade. I personally can't stand them but I don't mind having competitive gaming. Basically what I'm trying to say is I don't think there should be large cash pool at the end of a match but instead gamers should be satisfied with the victory and recognition like they used to have instead of trying to be all super MLG competitive players. And what further makes me annoyed with Esports is that I see people saying they are 'athletes' for playing a video game. And if someone tries to counter the argument and say that chess is a sport so why can't games be I barely agree with the idea of that but at least chess has the same rules and layout for a century or more instead of games which have only been present for like 5 years.

It's just as much a sport as golf, so no.
-
They're competitive sports but not athletic ones, same with chess.
-
Sport constitutes something physical. Playing video games does not require physical exertion, so it's not a sport. Same goes for chess, poker, anything you can do sitting down.
-
Depends. Do the Special Olympics count as real sports? Figure that out and you'll have your answer.
-
Yes for two reasons it falls under the category of sports by definition and because if you think about it NASCAR is a sport and that is the most boring sport ever.
-
Anyone who considers esports a legitimate sport deserves to be hitted with a sandal.
-
I guess if you had them walking up a flight of stairs to the arena it would count as a grueling sport to them.
-
I want to see an actual MLG answer this question?
-
MLG sweat bands on standby.
-
eSports are to actual sports as being Vine famous is to being actually famous. They don't count as the real thing, but people will act like they do when they need an ego boost.
-
Yes! Does Special Olympics count as real Olympics? Yes, for special people. Gamers are 'special' athletes. My thumbs are swole! I swear, all natural, no roids.
-
It's retarded and it promotes autism among the gaming community.
-
It's not a sport but why do you have a problem with the winning team getting money? It's not like it hurts you in any way.
-
Disclaimer: Opinion Below There's nothing wrong with winning a cash prize for your gaming superiority, If I was "Pro" enough to par take I would, but still isn't a real sport to me. Then you have things like Chess & Nascar that don't seem real "Sporty"? but are considered those... I don't know anymore.
-
Only MOBAs, RTS, and Arena FPS games should be. But it's really just the sponsors labeling it as a sport.
-
It's appalling some people have voted yes... The answer to the question is HELL NO.
-
No. It's a competition on the same level as say chess, but it's certainly not a sport, as it lacks the athleticism necessary to be a sport. Also, before you say that the IOC recognises chess as a sport: 1. This is the same IOC who is trying to remove wrestling, one of the original Olympic sports, from the Olympics; 2. Most chess players don't call themselves athletes or what they do 'sport'.

Edited by BerzerkCommando: 8/3/2014 10:51:44 AMIt's about as much of a sport as what using the remote is. Things like chess and gaming should not be considered sports, they should be considered "Gaming Competitions" or whatever. Playing Magic or Pokemon is not a sport so neither should these things be considered them. To me the term "sport" should only be used on something that's physical like football or requires physical condition like racing because of the speeds.
-
Its a competion yes but sport? I just don't see it. I mean is monopoly a sport? No
-
Take away the cash prize? Why? All competitive events should have cash rewards.
-
-
I would consider video games like chess, or board games. Sports for me are more physical challenging events.
-
Not even close.
True fact.
Well, looks like the authority on the subject has spoken. But why stop there? I think that real sports shouldn't be played for money. After all, it ruins the player's enjoyment and causes people to get upset when their favorite team loses. Also, I think that games should no longer be scored. After all, losing might hurt someone's ego. We can't have that. Lastly, I think we should only have a games where everyone is working together. Competition is a vestigial remnant of tribalism, which is the root cause of many modern ills.
-
The same way that Chess is a sport.

Edited by Tyger: 8/2/2014 11:42:36 PMI don't consider videogames, chess, billiards, golf, cheerleading, or women's lacrosse to be sports
