Why do I suck so bad at Destiny PVP?

Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it. Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty. Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE. So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta. Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table). p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

  • I am crucibles worst PvP player!. I follow advice and run and shoot, use space and cover .... then I get a Vex Mythoclast to the face wielded by someone whose health bar never moves despite my rounds and grenades hitting him!. Soul destroying aren't the words!

    • Use tight spaces to shoot for better cover and you will likely get the first shot, if you know ur gonna lose run and recharge shield and always crouch when u see red and stick with your team

    • Aiming for headshots help. Also don't panic and have fun even if you suck. Having steady is the best in a fps game

      • It has many thorns. Snipers. Fel winters snipers. Red deaths. You just have to learn the most effective way to kill them. Snipers flank them Fel winters- gonna need a super or shoot from mid range. Or another shotgun. Red death- it's spread is less accurate at longer ranges. Thorn- keep moving get up close

        • I find it helpful to dip out if u do not get the first shot off an... Bait them to think u are hurt... Make sure you take your time... An not rush on their spawn bcuz u will get slaughtered... An also utilize your melee ability...

        • Always try and stay with your teammate not only for the assist kill points but for the back up double team is always better then solo

If you are being 1 shot by weapons that aren't supposed to 1 shot..check into latency of your connection and also the tv you are using. Google "input lag" And your TV model. Beyond that sometimes you can't do anything other than take it up the tailpipe because they won't use dedicated servers.

...let me stsart with sayin that i am nowhere near being a 'pro-killer', however i used to be waaaaaaaaaay worse couple months ago. here's what helped me improve, might help you too (side note: i play Control almost exclusively, to me it seems to be the easiet mode for someone learning PvP): 1. LEARN the Maps - seriously, this is probably one of the most important 'skills' in Crucible. know the paths to/from each zone on the map. it will help you travel across the maps more safely, but even more importantly, it'll help you to understand where you can expect your enemies (choke points, etc.) from my experience, the easiest and most effective way of doing this is sticking with your teammates. pick someone on your team who's doin good and do your best to follow them. 2. FIND your Best Loadout - sure, TLW is great, but unless you know how to use it, you'll just end up being frustrated. so, my advice is to pick weapons you feel most comfortable using, stick to those unless you find something that works for you better 3. TAKE YOUR TIME - you might not get 20+ kills, but what i found worked (and still works) best for me is to simply stay back, don't rush into gunfights. instead, i usually focus on looking for cover that i can use during an encounter. learn to use the environment to your advantage. ...these are the most important ones for someone who's trying to improve, however there's LOT more to it - stuff like learning to use the radar (VERY useful tool), using as high sensitivity as you can handle (this is very important as well, since it allows you to react MUCH faster) and of course, the allmighty tool called YouTube - i seriously recommend to find some videos where people explain what they do and how they do it, learn from the best ;)

            • It's all about map control, keeping the higher ground, staying with the pack, and using good guns. Primary: Oversoul Edict Special: a trusty fusion rifle or ice breaker Heavy: Ghorn, truth, or high impact machine gun

            • Don't start from CQC. Switch to longer range weapon. (Scouts/Hawkmoon/Thorn etc. work well) Stay further back and learn to aim. Seriously learn to aim. Once you're comfortable there you can move closer. Pretty much everything else, like learning the maps, comes from playing...

              • Hide in a corner with a shotgun #HunterMasterRace Jks, just test out weapons that work the best for you. Just because you can't initially kill someone in 2 shots with a gun doesn't mean you can't do better with that gun compared to all the others. I use bad juju and even with a slow TTK (time to kill), I can go about 35-5 in a match using it. I suggest using scout rifles (Mida multi tool especially)

              • There may be some lag, yes, but I would say it's got to do with map knowledge. Once you know where enemies typically spawn and how they move on certain maps, you'll be able to anticipate where they will be at any given point. Your weapons are just as good as theirs, but since they are more experienced, they will be one step ahead of you, get the half second drop that makes all the difference in the world when the TTKs are so low, and you'll be killed rather than get the kill. Solution? Play more. Gain experience. Follow other players. Eventually you'll get a feel feel for it too and you'll do better.

Just keep at it, I was 100% a pve player, and when I tried to get the Thorn bounty it was painful. I was at .65 KD at the beginning of the Thorn bounty, I decided to keep on trying with the pvp and learning the maps and the well trodden routes people use is half the battle, as using the radar combined with map knowledge is where people anticipate. I am now at 1.67 KD while that's not great it's still an improvement, if I can improve anyone can.

              • Test out different weapon types in rumble mode. Thatll help you figure out your killing ability with certain weapons. Then move on to skirmish, for your tactical training. Then clash for team tactics and killing training. Then control to test it all out, along with the objective training. Then I'd go back to skirmish, for sheer fun. Because it's the funnest and requires most skill.
