You did fine with it. Although it can seem unfair to comment and give advice to people when you yourself haven't posted something, the fact is, if you build a crooked house, even somebody who doesn't know how to build a house will see it and point it out to you. They may not be able to help you fix it, but at the very least, they're pointing out something to you. As a rule of thumb, I do not engage in commenting of any kind unless somebody else specifically addresses me first. It makes things easier that way, and no doubt, somebody else will eventually come along and speak my words for me. But it's not a crime to comment on somebody elses work when you haven't done any to show. If anything, it should be a lesson to the creator. If a person who doesn't create as they do can spot flaws, then it means their work simply needs more work, so to speak.

  • When I comment on works, It's usually not on the artwork itself, but of what the artwork is depicting. Usually on guns or vehicles, I would point out the impracticality of a firearm's design or a vehicle's design and not the methods with which they made drew/modeled the work itself. That and things that are a bit obvious.

  • For one thing, pointing out impracticalities is a mistake, unless the artist is specifically going for a real world design. Art is an escape for the user, and one can create anything they wish, no matter how fantastical. As I said, it's fine and dandy if the artist is focused on realism, by all means you can point out flaws. But if it's not their primary focus, then don't bother to point it out. Adding reality where it is not mainly focused upon instantly detracts from what the artist set out to achieve in their work, and almost instantly can set you in a negative light and on bad footing with them.

I find that very counterproductive. If that's the case, then constructive criticism has no place. Isn't it better to assume they made a mistake and point it out, so that if they did, good. Now they know about it. And if they didn't they can tell the person they meant to do it. When I said impracticalities, I meant design flaws. Any one who is offended by this is much too sensitive and needs to be more open.
