Should kids say the Pledge of Allegiance in school?

I think it should be required in elementary school. Kids should be required to know and recite the pledge so they know where they come from and what the United States is about. I stopped saying it in high school but I still remember every word. We still played the anthem though. What do you think?

          >Land of the free >Required to swear allegiance to it Hmm, something seems not quite right here.

          • Yes, I said the Pledge of Allegiance through middle school but I never said that anti-commy "Under God" shit-part they added in the 50's. I stopped saying it all together in high school. A few buddies and I got into big trouble for refusing to stand up during the Pledge of Allegiance a couple times. However, it should not be required. It should be optional, unless you're in a special administrative area (such as a military base), but I don't feel like talking at length about the nuances of such matters. In short: They shouldn't be forced to the Pledge of Allegiance.

            • Why should they have to say it? You know, freedom and all that jazz that Americans constantly rave about.

                • They should have a moment where people do it, but not make it required. The problem is, most American teens are too lazy to stand...I remember one time, a kid got sent to the principal's office for not standing. The teacher that sent him started cussin' him out for not being grateful, telling him to get out of his country if he doesn't like it.

                  • It feels weird for people who immigrate to the U.S. When I moved to Texas I had to learn the Texas Pledge and the U.S pledge. I stood up with everyone and showed respect, but I didnt recite the words. Coming from Canada it just felt weird. I have nothing against the U.S. My family is getting our citizenship sometime this year but it will still be weird. I do 100% support the troops though!

                    • I think that it should be said, but it should not be required. Building patriotism and social unity can be both a dangerous and beneficial thing. Too much, and nationalism causes trouble, too little, and anarchy ensues. According to various social theories, increasing one's feelings of belonging (patriotism includes this) you reduce the likelihood of them committing crimes.

Having a bunch of children mindlessly swear fealty to a flag every day is fairly creepy. Not to mention the original salute.

Chanting words over and over again as a routine with all your peers around you to instill a sense of obligation is indoctrination 101. So, no, I do not agree with it. I'd also like to clarify that I do not think it is some subversive plot to instill a sense of obedience or any other inane conspiracy. However it came about, it is still indoctrination.
