The Sinner is actually a lady, and as the description of her soul goes, it states that it's she that punishes herself for some ancient crimes committed, sworn to be imprisoned for all eternity.

Well, now I'm even more curious.
-
Wait... What??? Shit who is this person and what did she do?
-
She tried to do what the witch of izalith did and light a new fire
-
Who knows. But she was the one who put herself down there. So whatever it was, she herself felt pretty guilty about it.

I would say maybe Gwynevere felt bad about abandoning her family's kingdom (since the lost sinner is supposed to be ancient) but she doesn't quite have the same... Um... Build... Lol. So my guess is that maybe it has to do with the fourth fire keeper that seems to be missing at the beginning of the game. It could be her, or maybe she killed her. Then again that may not be ancient enough.
-
You met the fourth in the opening cutscene. She's the one that initially sets you up to go looking for Drangleic. The other three say howdy to you once you get there.
-
That does make since. So the fourth fire keeper left the kingdom presumably to lead people back to stall the curse.
-
They are probably the closest ones to knowing what's wrong. But not to stall the curse. The curse is irrelvant to them. Their job is to keep bonfires, the force of the first flame, alive. Four primal bonfires, four fire keepers. However, there's an old theory that in fact the curse is artificial, created as a tool to use and lead powerful Humans to extend those last moments of light just a bit longer. This is based off of the interactions between Nito, Gywn, and the Way of the White.
-
That's what I mean. If you talk to the lady watching over the three firekeepers she says that the fourth is gone. So if the fourth is the old lady in the beginning there's a good chance she's probably just leading people back whenever she can.

Drops the mention of things, one little line of thought, a single line like a spiders web, and then sooner or later they show up.

Very eloquently spoken sir.
