If you fill a jar with jelly beans and ask 100 people to guess the amount, the jelly bean principle suggests that the average guess will be close to the real answer. I translated the vagaries into concrete ranges (e.g. "mid-July" = 7/15/2014), then use the midpoint of that range as that person's guess.
