In an effort to combat perceived discrimination, one Portland school seems to have gone off the deep end by suggesting peanut butter and jelly sandwiches carry racist connotations, Twitchy reported Monday.
According to the Portland Tribune, Verenice Gutierrez, principal of Harvey Scott K-8 School, "picks up on the subtle language of racism" on a daily basis.
"Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year," the Tribune said.
“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” Gutierrez asked. “Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”
After reading the article, I find the sample text and title pretty misleading, and a poorly written article. The point was that phrases and sayings here in America might not make sense to someone who wasn't accustomed to or familiar with them. Not that PB&Js are the staple food of the KKK.

Hey, I remember this story from last year when it happened. No one actually read the story, because the headline (like the OP's title) is entirely misleading, and it scared people away from their own critical reading skills. If you read the article, you'll see that the teacher is simply saying that to get foreign students to understand American culture, you have to compare things we do here to things that they do in their home countries. If foreign students don't eat peanut butter and jelly, then they might not get questions where it is used. The sandwiches are just an example. No one is talking about actual sandwiches. You can continue to eat PB&J with no racial connotations, people.

Edited by Psy: 8/28/2013 5:59:06 PMI'm a ricecake and I find the lack of inclusion of my people in this news article highly offensive. Just because I'm fluffy, white/caramel coloured and made from a different form of cereal to your racist white bread supremacist flours. Doesn't make me any less filling. And what about my Rye Friend over here? The exclusion of his people for the misconception you can get ergot poisoning from eating him is highly discriminatory. End this madness now.

Cultural difference in food consumption =/= Racism Especially when they're all living in America and have probably had a PB&J. Isn't America supposed to be a "melting pot"? Why the -blam!- is this guy acting like Americans are shoving sandwiches down the throats of Somolian students?
-
1 ReplyNo, that does make a small degree of sense. And, he wasn't saying they were racist, he was using the PB&J as an example. The PB&J is distinctly American. Just like using Samosas, or Felafel would lose American students. It just depends on how its done. The important thing to remember is that American classrooms are very multicultural now. Examples should be as multicultural as the students. You guys like to exaggerate what he said.

Edited by Oyik: 8/29/2013 12:24:02 PMThe -blam!-? Why can't Americans like this use logic, how is 2 pieces of bread, peanut butter and a bit of jam racist? How dafuq does it have anything to do with racism? If anything it promotes multiculturalism by having 3 very different bases mixed into a yummy snack.

Just feed them rice then like they do with all the 3rd worlds countries.
