I've never played them, but from what I've heard the games aren't so much scary as they are startling. It's more about things that jump out and go "Boo!" rather than deep-seated, get in your head, psychological, "Oh dear god, why did I play this at night?" horror. But I didn't play them, so what do I know.

You heard right for the most part. It does make you phycological in some ways. (Mostly in the game) You can't wonder past any air vent, dead body, or most of the times rooms without expecting something to pop up. Not to mentioned if you die you start to think "oh no they can't scare me again" but every time you die the enemy changes place. And the way they do it is brilliant. They make most scares different and you start to think the games not going to out smart you but then you're proved wrong. You start to not want to fight and only run and the chases in the game are adrenaline filled to the max. The games are create and I would totally recommend them to any body who can handle gore.
