Its survival horror but giving you power. While in games like Amnesia you don't really have power. Dead Space is great but you're not gonna feel frightened when you know you can easily kill. Be on edge? Oh yea that can happen. Genuine fear? Not so much.

  • I believe it has genuine fear as well just to an extent.

  • Yes you are correct. Dead Space offers moments of genuine fear but is strongest when you first start playing the series especially 1. People complain that Dead Space 2 & 3 weren't as scary as 1 but its fact that the player is pretty much built as a necromorph slayer so the fear subsides with familiarity while Amnesia you're always in danger since the simple fact is you can't fight back.

  • When people say that Dead Space 2 wasn't scary I nearly flip out. The game has much more dialogue but that's about the only difference between 2 and the first Dead space.

  • I'm not saying Dead Space 2 isn't scary but if you've played Dead Space 1 extensively before and jumped into Dead Space 2 knowing how to play fear subsides a little due to your familiarity as Isaac going against necromorphs. Also knowing necromorph tricks like playing dead. Dead Space 2 is scary but familiarity helps subside the fear a bit.

  • I loved Dead Space 2 but honestly I felt Dead Space shouldn't have continued as a direct sequels. That it should have made a new character and live the fear all over again as a vulnerable character

  • I liked the Dead Space 2 dlc it had the character switch but not the same feel as Dead Space 1. He wasn't a vulnerable guy, he was a squad leader of the military force and the fact that he wasn't a completely new character. He went against the necromorphs before. By new character I mean a completely inexperienced person with the necromorphs.

  • Oh like a new Isaac? That's a little unlikely though. I'm sure most people(depending ok where thief from) have already faced necromorphs. Also a zombie apocalypse would be widely known about. By new person I think it should be someone who didnt believe in the Necromorphs at all. So when the game starts theyll think its a person at first, something the walking dead(only at first though)

Necromorph threat was known by the government and unitologists, ordinary citizens probably don't know about the threat. But yea like maybe a person who was in disbelief of rumors about it and a person who wasn't combat ready. I mean thats why Dead Space 1 felt the scariest since you're put into the boots of just another dude with his job being an engineer, not a killer. While in Dead Space 2 & 3 you've gotten familiar with Isaac being a necromorph slayer.
