The FDA values a human life at $7.9 million (source).
The value of an animal is hard to determine because there are many species. I will use the average of the value of several common farm animals (cow, horse, chicken, sheep, pig), domestics dogs and cats, animals very commonly hunted (deer, goose), and the average value of common fish (tuna, mackerel, and salmon).
Cow: $1642.03
Horse: $2,200
Chicken: $20
Sheep: $250
Pig: $100
Domestic Dog: $250
Cat: $150
Deer: $500
Goose: $50
Tuna: $10000
Mackerel: $10
Salmon: $70
Average value of a generic animal's life: $1270.17
So in order to be a murderer, you must kill an average of 6,220 animals.
I would consider it murder if you kill an animal for no reason. Just because its not human doesn't make it worthless.
Insect pests are one thing but if it's not a threat don't kill it!
