Grognok World Builder...FOR ALL! [...please?..]

I have been a Halo fan since the very first boot hit the ground. Since Halo 3, I realized my place; I am a FORGER first and foremost. I cannot play a multiplayer map, a campaign segment, a firefight or Spartan ops mission without disengaging from the enemy in order to closer inspect and appreciate what went into BUILDING the play space, mentally taking it apart to see how it ticks... Now, we have Destiny. And with precious little to go on, regarding game modes and tools available, we can only imagine the possibilities and potentials. But I KNOW one thing: I WANT TO MAKE MY OWN PLAY SPACES IN DESTINY. Will they let me? ...I dunno...maybe? While nothing has been announced, there WAS that one segment of the ComicCon panel that showed the "Grognok World Builder". It was sorta introduced as "Bungie's Tool" for building the areas of the game that we will play in...making it seem as though this was something that was used to MAKE the game...not something that COMES WITH the game... ...but then I got thinking...WHY give a 'behind-the-scenes-tool' so much screen time to an audience who would never get to use it themselves...why tease us with it? Then, the optimistic side of me, who thinks Bungie will ALWAYS IMPRESS AND AMAZE, got to thinking; what if they DO give us the Grognok World Builder? How impossible would that be? If you ask anyone who played the "Far Cry" franchise, they would say 'not impossible at all'. And really, from the looks of what we saw in the video, it looks very much like the Far Cry editor...terrain tools and all. So what do you all think regarding our chances to be able to create our own play spaces and share them in Destiny, in a manner much the same as Halo and Forge? Would you even want such a thing? ...is it not as important to others in the community as it is to me? DISCUSS [ TLDR: Gimme Forge in Destiny! ]

  • They stated later, they have to finish the ground work. Maybe in Destiny 2.

  • Valve hands out Hammer, but they also own their own distribution service. I think there's more than just publishing limitations that would hold this back. It would only work on a PC version, and Destiny doesn't seem like the kind of game for custom maps anyway.

    • The issue comes with the part of where do these locations go. By the looks so far, I don't think it fits to have a map builder/editor however if there is some sort of lobby system then maybe. I feel they're aiming for everything to have narrative (hence the idea of not having a main idea) so map building is eh. Maybe in future sequels you can build a base when humans start re colonizing but the issue again is [i don't think] Guardians are meant to be the ones re colonizing. They're [probably] supposed to just clear the area and push the hostiles back in order for humanity to expand again and to find out what pushed humanity back the first time and how to prevent it from occurring again.

      • So Bungie invests thousands and thousands of dollars to creating a truly revolutionary world builder, and you want them to release it to the community and beyond for nothing? It's great to be optimistic and everything but wake up. Not to mention giving access to Grognok to all of Bungies competitors (it is a business after all)...

        • Far Crys editor in halo... Jesus I think Halo 3 would still have huge player counts if there was a playlist for it.

        • Ever since Halo 3 forge, I dreamt of a map editor that'd let you create custom textures and skyboxes. If you can build custom play spaces in Destiny, it couldn't be part of the open world though. It'd have to be like Halo 3, a stand alone map that is loaded from a menu. I really doubt you'll have custom games integrated into the main game itself, but who knows?

          • I don't think they would spend that much time and money building not a current generation but a next generation world builder to just give it away to the people before the new gen even has really started? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......no

            • What you have to understand is that this is a very high-powered development tool. To compare this to Halo, they didn't use Forge to create their entire game. I would put good money that they won't include the Grognok you see there in the game. It would be very difficult to integrate custom maps with a large scale co-op game anyways. I'm sorry. I love Forge as well, but I just don't see this happening.

Hell yeah, what I, and many others, can build with this new tool. Is unimaginable, i would spend hours on end using it for sure i loved far cry 3's editor on the 360 and i've always loved halo's forge, so yeah, i'm down!

                  • GDC = Game Developers Conference - which means the target audience isn't players but other game developers. Developers showing off internal tools is kinda a common thing at GDC - sometimes even the point of the panel. That being said I would love player facing world building tools in Destiny.

                    • I hope so. I loved custom maps and games in Halo, it was one of my favorite parts playing other people's ideas. I'm not sure they'd give us their entire world creator, but I can at least hope for something forge-like.

The audience was developers. Sorry if this dampens your hope but I think your operating under a false one.
