Glimmer

What do you think it will be? Most people assume some type of enemy, but I'm sure someone has a different idea. POST IT

  • You use Glimmer and toolkits to level up weapons and maybe armor.

  • This is probably wrong, but its just an idea.. How about the glimmers are the original keepers of the traveler? and its from them that the guardians get their powers.. so instead of being an enemy they are the guiding force, the 'glimmer' of hope that drives the guardians on? body less beings that inhabit the traveler and protected us from destruction..now they work with us like link and navi (tho less shit and annoying than that!) giving us powers and turning us into space bad-asses... Probably wrong but i thought id throw it out there.

    • I'm getting an idea they will be the Traveler's sworn enemy. Maybe it was them, who hit us. Or maybe they are the Traveler's rightful owners? Who knows...

    • I've been thinking it's that robed, antler-wearing figure show for a fraction of a second in the GDC vid: Here's a link to another post, scroll down for the picture... • In Bungie's GDC panel, they were talking about enemies who, when you killed them, had their 'souls' fly out of their bodies. Not to mention that the art with the five races shows the Glimmer, and in the background you can see what is very likely to be a pyramid ship. You can also see their body type, which is a tall, slender figure with what appears to be a glowing head or face. I think these are all connected. The Glimmer are a tall, slender race that lives aboard the Pyramid ships, or at least uses them for a base of operations. And that they are the same creatures who's souls fly out of their bodies, due to the smoke in their picture.

        • Bungie likes hiding things in plain sight. They've never explained this postcard image, which is very very odd. For one, it's the only time we've seen mixed enemy factions in any asset given to us by Bungie. For another, they do not have weapons. More obviously, they are glowing inwardly with an otherworldly glow, and that smoke surrounding them? Seems clear that something is controlling them like puppets. A fifth race, more sinister than the others, that doesn't have a physical form but instead controls others to accomplish its worldly biddings, would be a very interesting addition to Destiny.

            • Glimmer itself means something intermittent, not really there, so I think they will be a more subtle and scary enemy. I do think that they will take over bodies like in that one wallpaper and I could see them as a truly terrifying opponent. Imagine heading to some ruins on mars that you think are held by the Cabal, but everything is eerily quiet, then all of a sudden smoke starts pouring around the corners of buildings and what look like cabal corpses come out attacking, and when the fighting is all over, the smoke slowly recedes, and you have no idea where the glimmer is or when it will strike.

            • Havnt read all the posts but could a glimmer be an invading guardian, like dark souls had wraiths and dark spirits, or it's a helpful guardian that enters your world?

              • I think when it said something hit us and tried to stomp us out it was referring to the glimmer maybe this specie is some kind of advanced alien force that is way more evolved than any other enemy

              • could be like the reapers in mass effect... not actually there most of the time but directly or indirectly control the enemies we fight? could also be the original creators of the vex?

              • Maybe, just maybe, it's a forerunner rip-off and all the aliens worship them and seek to destroy the Humans in their name. jk jk. I think it will be the sort of "hidden enemy" we won't see until the middle of the game and we are all like "woah now, that's why the Traveler helped us". I really can't imagine them being good guys
My own suspicion is that the "Glimmer" represent a non-corporeal "demonic" or unknown and unknowable alien (delete for preference) agency in the Destiny universe. Deprived of a means to directly, physically and malevolently intervene in humanities affairs they attempt to influence matters through the possession/manipulation of the other alien races (excepting the Vex who, by their very nature as machines, cannot be used in this fashion). Perhaps, if indeed they represent the existential threat to humanity, they were once capable of direct physical manifestation. Did they wage a genocidal war against us in all our guises at the height of the Golden Age? Are they sustained or nourished by fear and terror? Were they of a magnitude of power that it took the sacrifice of the Traveler to halt them? It's possible that their motivations will remain incomprehensible and outside the scope of our understanding (Lovecraftian influence perchance?). Unbodied and retreating to the moon they are now, reduced yet still terrible, reaching once again towards humanity.
What I posted in the linked thread.
