What or who put a stop to the Golden Age, is my biggest question. Moreover, did humans achieve superhuman ascension during that time?

Yes, that's a big question. I think it could be answered when the supposed new race (Glimmer) is revealed. Bungie could be holding off the reveal due to any spoilers it can potentially bring. As for superhuman ascension, possibly. The Awoken, and how one becomes one, could play a big role in that.
