You can play it from your desk and use your controller to navigate, the kinect only needs to be connected to the console. Nothing else.

But why necessitate this connection? I'm definitely going to use no part of Kinect so why do I need it lying around, as one more thing collecting the seeming abundance of dust in my room?
-
You don't know whether or not you will use the Kinect at all when you get it. Good chances are you will utilize it if you chose to purchase the Xbox One.
-
If the Xbox One reveal conference is any indication (and I believe it was due to the fact that they spent almost the entire hour showing you what it can do hardware and system wise) the Kinect 2.0 will mainly be used to interface with the operating systems, not to be used with core games like Halo, CoD, Bioshock etc...
-
Yeah that's a given.
-
I can guarantee you I will not. My room is not big enough, (there is maybe a 1x2m floor space), and I despise using voice tech with devices because it rarely works and it feels awful to me.
-
No idea, its probably just to show their partners that every household with an Xbox One has a Kinect to shore up support, kind of like Sony justifying the inclusion of blu ray 7 years ago which did nothing at first but raise the cost of production, but down the line it won them the battle between it and HD-DVD all because they were able to state that there were more blu ray players sold than HD-DVD players.
-
Yeh I see what you're saying. On the other hand, what is there to compete with Kinect? I mean, Playstation's move crap is hardly a competitor, no matter how bad Kinect is.. It kind of has its own market.
-
True, but to grow that market, moves like having it be required to be plugged into your console would definitely help :)
