Why are there no awards for song lyrics?

There are awards for "best rap artist" or "best new artist". But, why are there no accolades for writing terrific lyrics? Does no one care about the lyrics to a song?

    • And the award goes to..... SLAYER Auschwitz, the meaning of pain The way that I want you to die Slow death, immense decay Showers that cleanse you of your life Forced in Like cattle You run Stripped of Your lifes worth Human mice, for the angel of death Four hundred thousand more to die Angel of death Monarch to the kingdom of the dead Sadistic, surgeon of demise Sadist of the noblest blood Destroying, without mercy To benefit the aryan race Surgery, with no anesthesia Fell the knife pierce you intensely Inferior, no use to mankind Strapped down screaming out to die Angel of death Monarch to the kingdom of the dead Infamous butcher, Angel of death Pumped with fluid, inside your brain Pressure in your skull begins pushing through your eyes Burning flesh, drips away Test of heat burns your skin, your mind starts to boil Frigid cold, cracks your limbs How long can you last In this frozen water burial? Sewn together, joining heads Just a matter of time til you rip yourselves apart Millions laid out in their Crowded tombs Sickening ways to achieve The holocaust Seas of blood, bury life Smell your death as it burns Deep inside of you Abacinate, eyes that bleed Praying for the end of Your wide awake nightmare Wings of pain, reach out for you His face of death staring down, Your blood running cold Injecting cells, dying eyes Feeding on the screams of The mutants hes creating Pathetic harmless victims Left to die Rancid angel of death Flying free

    • Lot's of people do care. But those people all disagree. Are good lyrics straight to the point, or should they use more imagery? Should they focus more on the actual story or the meaning behind it? It's hard to decide what's lyrically superior (although it is sometimes obvious that songs have very poor lyricism). They could spend all year arguing about which songs have the best lyrics, or they could give awards to popular musicians that more people know of. It's a business decision, and it really makes sense. You wouldn't care for a category if you don't know a majority of the nominees. So they shoot for simple categories so they can make a decision, and use popular musicians so people care about the results.

      • Mostly because the lyrics in mainstream music nowadays is crap. Bands and artists that actually produce quality content don't even get recognition in mainstream award shows like the Grammys.

      • Perhaps because it's almost like saying somebody's mind is better than someone else's. Sure, a lot of music is just crap lyrics with good music behind it, but a lot of people write songs that mean something to them. Something personal, and I think it's a bad idea to try and say rank something like that. It may not be catchy, or make a million dollars, but that song means something, to somebody.
