I'm pretty sure the only purpose to liking is that you post gets bumped up higher when people set their post order to 'popular'.

Then why show emblems in the first place? Why not just have a like counter, such as that on Reddit, on your post that only you can see? The site takes the time to show you the person's emblem; why not the whole name?
