Halo 4 - The CSR fails.

People on Waypoint are reporting that they have already reached level 40, with only 20 games played. I guess that's why 343i announced that they'll be resetting the CSR regularly. I'm guessing that the system doesn't punish you as much as it used to in Halo 3 and 2, I'll add this note to the ongoing Halo 4 boycott. Though, since I'm boycotting, I couldn't form my own opinion. EDIT: A level 40 on waypoint suggested that the fast leveling could be related to playing with lower level players. Probably because Halo 4's system isn't as strict in finding equally skilled matches as Halo 2/3 was, IMO. What's your opinion about the CSR's settings?

If someone had trouble getting to level 50, they would just create a second account, get matched up with much less experienced players, and rocket up to 50. This is exactly why people like myself thought that anyone wanting that ranking system back was a moron.

The fact that people are already near the highest rank isn't surprising in the least. A ranking system tries to create a nice bellcurve distribution to the ranks, you don't want too many people near the bottom, and while you don't want too many people near the top, you need to have people near the top, otherwise your distribution becomes bottom heavy. So it's no surprise at all to me that the system has taken a few of the players that have performed the best and immediately placed them closer to the top of the distribution. Once the system has been going for a while, such a feat should be harder to replicate, it's just that with certainty so low, people can move very quickly through the system. I expect Halo 3 at launch was no different.

    • CSR seems to be working alright for me. I played a few games of BTB slayer last night with my regular group. After 4 games I was an 11. The two guys in my group who are better than me were 19 and 23 after the same number of games. My brother one friend of mine is a 5, and my other friend was a 1. I don't know how accurate their CSR is compared to everyone else playing the game... But I do know that of everyone compared to just each other, only my brother seemed over-weighted (that, or my other friend who has the same CSR is underrated..) The point being, going into this I already had an idea of the skill level of all the people I play with, CSR verified that feeling. The system seems to be working just fine, despite your trepidation.

Is the CSR on a bell-curve? If it is, that's just how it works. They need a distribution of skill to start with to form the rest of the curve. The 1-50 in Halo 3 only tracked your progression, not exclusively your skill (echo, echo...) it wasn't a bell curve. With Halo 4's CSR, you see where you currently stand on the curve; closer to 1, or closer to 50. An IQ test for example is always measured on a bell curve with the average being 100. I don't work my way from mentally retarded to child prodigy through years of hard work, you start with an IQ, and that's that. Think of Halo 4's CSR as your Halo IQ. In this sense, it is a more accurate representation of your true skill at any given time period then Halo has ever had.

      • OP this might be hard for you to understand since you never reached 40 in Halo 3, but you could get 50 in Halo 3 in around 23 games if not less. Getting to 40 in 20 doesn't mean they changed how the system works. Now I don't doubt that the system is completely different from Halo 3's, but that isn't good enough proof imo to say it is easier or harder to rank up.

Er... they NEVER said that they would be resetting CSR regularly and anyone who is saying that either cannot read or has suffered from some kind of blow to the head.
"We are actively investigating occasional CSR resets, both globally and for certain playlists. Reasons for resetting ranks include overhauls to CSR calculation, Halo 4 game updates, and events and promotions centered on CSR. Resetting CSR is not something we’re taking lightly so when we do reset it, we’ll be sure to provide ample messaging describing the reasons for doing so."
At absolutely no point do they say how frequent resets will be beyond "occasional".

        •
I guess that's why 343i announced that they'll be resetting the CSR regularly.
So there's really no point of this system since even if you do get maxed. After some time you're going to keep getting rested and matched with people worse than you? I find it funny they spent all this time on it and it's apparently shit. That's not surprising since the game is on the same level.
