How will the Destiny story be told, and what role do we play? My Theory

This is my thought process on what Destiny’s story is, what role you will play as a player, and why it will be that way. I’ve tried to keep it somewhat organized and flowing for anyone brave enough to go through it. It’s a series of questions I was asking myself, followed by my attempted answers and reasoning. I’d love to get the ball rolling on this topic, as I haven’t heard much about it on here. So here goes: Are we all variations of the same hero? Much like Reach where you were Noble 6, are we all one 'chosen' Guardian? The PS4 trailer said that it was our mission as Guardian to solve the problems facing humanity. So it would be reasonable to think this, and I probably would if it weren't for the fact they explicitly said, "millions of heroes" at the GDC. Also, it would be strange to see other people in the world and know that they are also 'the chosen one'. No, we are all unique, so: Are we all a different Guardian? This is the most realistic thing to expect in Destiny. Every human-controlled player is a Guardian. The only Guardians are human controlled. We each are a part of the 'army' of Guardians attempting to defend the human race from extinction. There may be one or two Guardians which are CPU controlled, but only for dialogue purposes. However there wont be any AI, marine-esque, foot soldiers by your side; those positions will be filled by real people, that's the magic of this game. It would make sense to have us all making up the force that is the main protagonist of the game. The player base as a whole makes up all of the Guardians We as a community are to Destiny as the Master Chief is to Halo. This leads me to ask: How does the story progress? Is there a ‘main quest’ that we all complete? This is the standard –but – if every character is completing the same major missions and objectives it leads us back to the first question. By having everyone complete the same set of major quests each player’s story would be the same. We still will share very similar experiences, battles, dungeons, etc. but not to the heroic, one man army, extent we did with the Master Chief. We rather are working towards a common goal. This would support the co-operative environment that Bungie has said they want. Bungie has stated that the world of Destiny will be evolving, and even they do not know what could happen. They’ve also said during the GDC that they aren’t making the standard 8-10 hour FPS game. This makes me believe that the main story-arc is not determined by what you do alone, but by what we as a community do as a whole. The story isn’t the ‘pipe’ that you follow in normal shooters, but an organic tale evolving to how we play. So: How is the story told? Staten said during the GDC that they (Bungie) are cinematic based storytellers. It’s fairly obvious that the main points will therefore be told through cinematics. The missions which we can all immediately take part in, and watch the cinematics, will be designed to explain to us the world we are in. The story telling that is being done is not focused on the current battles and individual triumphs, but the Destiny universe as a whole. To compare to Halo, the cut-scenes that we can expect will be similar to those of our discovery of the flood. The cut-scenes will be more focused on the moments of awe, wonder, and discovery, as opposed to the one man army cinematics. Still: What about the main storyline? This is where I expect Destiny will really set itself apart from other games. Watch and listen carefully to the ViDoc from 0:57-1:18. This is the best hint we have of how the main story-arc will work, and supports my previous claim of an evolving world based off of what we do. Notable screens are: 0:59 – The notification ‘New Chapter on Venus’ insinuates that there will be continuously added missions. 1:07 – The text ‘Venus is awesome tonight! Meet u there?’ implies that certain locations will be of focus at certain times. 1:15 – The notification ‘Get in the game and help us take our worlds back from our enemies’ supports the idea that the main storyline is a community effort, decided by our actions. Notable quotes: “Really make a conscious effort to build an experience which is going to be meaningful for people” – Taking part in the main missions which are added will be important to people. We have an impact on our overall success or failure. “How do you keep a player going for 50 or 100 hours over some number of months” – Further implying that new, important, missions are added. All of these support my previous claims. So finally: What’s the TL;DR? - We are each our own person, each a unique Guardian. - Every Guardian is human controlled, the Guardians are the players. - The only set in stone quest-line will be to help us understand the Destiny universe, and answer questions. - There will be no mission which has you complete a legendary task which massively influences the main story-arc. - The Guardians are the protectors of humanity, we as a community are shaping Destiny’s story together. - The main story-arc is decided day-to-day based off of what we as a community achieve in previous missions.

  • Destiny's story will be told in forty dollar installments. Our role is as cash machines.

    • I think that theory is more than plausible. If what you're saying is true, then anyone who joins the fight over the next ten years will have a totally unigue experience. Bungie can decide the fate of our players, and turn up the heat as necissary. Say we are losing our collective war badly, they may create an opportunity for players to earn a new weapon to turn the tide of war. If we crush the invaders under our heel, Bungie may cause a meteor to crash down on a planet and destroy a major outpost, creating a power vacuum into which the greedy aliens will stampede. As we continue to fight and win or lose major efforts, I suspect more planets will become available based on our failure or success. So excited. Great idea Old Monarch.

      • Previously I had thought that the story would end somewhat inconclusively, as Destiny is a three title, ten year franchise. It would build and build, and by the end be spectacular. But you have to start at the bottom the build up, so I predicted the Destiny 1 ending would be good, but not great. Something along the lines of 'The Hobbit' and its sequels, for example. A great story, but broken into three parts, without a truly powerful ending until the final addition. However, this theory of a dynamic story, in addition to a dynamic world, intrigues me. Do you think it would be like 'Dishonored', where the outcome is determined by player choices (in this case many, many, players)? Or do you think Bungie will have staff writing somewhat on the fly, constantly expanding Destiny's story over the course of the 3 or so years until the next title, through DLC and extra missions becoming available every few weeks/months?

      • I think it's realistic to expect a more mundane military of the city In addition to the Guardians. Like the Imperial guards were to the space Marines.

      • I'm hoping it's somewhere in the ballpark of Red Dead Redemption and Borderlands 2, at least in terms of story structure (and the ability to easily add on additional quests/areas).

      • We are not chosen, we are not heros, we are Guardians. We were not chosen, because we chose to be. Our actions alone are small. Our actions together can reclaim Earth. Our story alone is nothing special. Our story together is everything.

        • That would suck so much ass. God no, at least if there is lets say two campaigns or the option to go to the online side of the destiny world. Like one moment your the master chief then you switch to the online aspect and your just one of the millions yes that would be nice, all while retaining the same character. Not like defiance, heck no. Also if it is like that they would be no sense of completion as if you finish a mission and half of that building blew up, when it's all over it is just the way it is waiting for another online player to experience that, how will cutscenes work. Anyway i just hope they dont ruin their great idea. (wow long post)

        • For all people reading this, I can't see internet connection being a problem, since you're here in the first place. Most people here are hardcore bungie fans, and as a result probably have a half decent connection.

          • I love this theory, but I see it being more applied to the open world rather than the main storyline. When you really think about it there are a lot of faults in this theory. How would they do sequels to destiny if the story they are trying to continue constantly changes? I also think that there will be many NPCs but not all. They have shown that robot guard looking dude in the vidoc.

Did Bungie confirmed cutscenes on story moments? or will be text quests just like in WoW? Anyone knows?

            • What happens if you miss it? Do you have to complete every action cooperatively? It sounds cool, but I enjoy the single player experience too, and I don't want that to be sacrificed in the name of this social revolution. I don't care if everyone completes the same "you're the chosen one" campaign as long as the story is good. That being said this is a good, well-evidenced theory!

                • It would be awesome to have special quests for special armor/other equipment like give most everything a background story. I am guessing that there will be a melee type of attack so how about a quest to a long lost cave to find some sick sword or other things of that nature. -Z.D

                • I hope that Bungie don't just throw out single player all together... I don't like the concept of having to always be online for the game to actually work- my connection is terrible or un-usable most of the time. As long as there is some type of single player/ offline storyline, I'm happy. This game looks brilliant

                  • You have indeed put much thought into the concept upon what Destiny might be. It's good to think that instead of being the Lone Wolf out on the field with a bunch of A.I.'s, wel'll have fully interactive, responsive people to assist you that'll understand what to do. The game as well not only seems to focus upon how one would just shoot through the game themselves, but rather use strategic team tactics to beat the game, and also looks to be focusing upon not only you, though the player may play a major role in the game, it seems that the whole of all players within Destiny is the prime focus.

I don't really think it will or should be purely community based story, especially the main story. I am sure there will be scripted missions that everyone must complete. I can't see it going like: a bad alien leader is killed by one player, that alien would be removed from the community and no one else would be able to kill him. That would make it a race to complete the main missions. I think new material will be added later on, but people who join the game in a few years should still be able to complete the same level of content and kill the same main villains as a person playing from release day.
