Clues that the Vanguard is a subclass of the Titan

1. Look at the newly released Titan concept art. It is very similar (the belt even looks exactly the same) to the character in the selection screen with the unknown symbol. 2. The unknown symbol and the Titan's symbol look pretty similar too. It's just a little detail that sets them apart. 3. The unknown symbol is also on the chestplate of the Titan in the recently released character trailer (he wears the previously mentioned belt too). This could be the Vanguard armor which was mentioned in the latest OXM issue. 4. When the Titan is shown in the character trailer there is a "V" and an "S" in the sign in the bottom left corner. Maybe "V" stands for Vanguard and "S" for the second subclass. 4. These are quotes from different sources (IGN, Polygon, Mail Sack) describing the same situation:
A shootout soon turns ugly for Staten’s Warlock and Jones’s Vanguard. Fortunately, a mysterious female player – rocking a Hunter class – speeds in on the very Ghost-like Pike vehicle and helps turn the tide [...]

Now a fireteam of three, they survive their battle against the Sandeaters and claim their prize: exotic weapons looted from Charlemagne's chamber. Those recovered weapons, an onyx, spiked "hand cannon" named Thorn, and a sleek, angular shotgun named Invictive, are part of Destiny's narrative.

Jason finds a new shotgun – perfect for his close-quarters combat style.
A shotgun. Sounds a lot like a Titan, doesn't it? Apart from this the name Vanguard would suit a close-quarters combat subclass quite well. 5. (From the same Mail Sack in which the shotgun Jason's Vanguard picked up was mentioned)
Xenos85 What class of the announced classes is your favorite? Two Words: Titan [Redacted]! Amos Yuen, Associate Engineer
What do you think?

    • Has anyone had the idea that the term "Vanguard" may just be a placeholder name for the Titan earlier in development?

    • Bungie has mentioned a Vangaurdian in Destiny before, the only time they have is when they've had people test Destiny for them. So I think if you play the Beta, you will get a special title the pertains to you being a Vangaurdian.

      • I would really like something like sub-classes you know, to specialize and such. Unluckily I have to bring some points against your theory: 1- The symbol could have probably been a placeholder, or they could've changed it. 2- In that quote, the [Redacted] could likely be referring to a race, since they weren't yet announced by the time they opened that mailsack. 3- As someone said, the "Vanguard" name could've been changed to Titan. Still, I hope I'm wrong because the classes "Hunter assassin" or "Warlock sorcerer" are wandering through my mind eheh

        • So it would go something like: Titan: Vanguard(CQC maybe?) Demolitions(High Explosives?) Hunter: Sniper Assassin(Proficiency in pistols)

          • The most convincing evidence was the redacted part at the end. I think we've just stumbled upon one of our first of many subclasses. Good job!

          • maybe subclass is decided by like what "skill tree" you major in (if they exist in game)

          • Could be that I found the Vanguard armor that was mentioned in the latest OXM issue.

            • This is confirmed. I read in the OXM story something along the lines of a quote saying that one of their characters was a Titan wearing Vanguard armor.

            • BTW Vanguards aren't a by definition a CQB class. In their definition they are more of a fast-moving expeditionary force. They would use alot of hit-and-run tactics and would have middle-low amounts of health. The would have extremely high DPS though. If they are a titan subclass then they would be the middle ground between a hunter and a titan.

V on one side for Vanguard specialization, an S on the opposite side if you chose the other path? just a guess

            • nah, check out OXM this month, it tells the same story the old IGN article did, but it says before going out he meets up with his friend who plays a Titan and who was wearing new Vanguard armor.

                • SWTOR had 4 classes and at level 10 you could choose your advanced class. Each advanced class has a unique skill tree. So for instance you chose to roll a Sith Inquisitor. At level 10 you could choose one of two advanced classes; the Assassin (melee dps) or the Sorcerer (range dps/healer). So I wouldn't be surprised if Bungie is doing something similar as I think its a great idea to bring class diversity to the game.

                  • Maybe it's just skill trees like with borderlands, except you can only pick one? Thats pretty much a sub class, but a little different.

                  • I think it's Titan Vanguard. Does anyone else think the secondary name, if present, could refer to a weapon proficiency or even just a play style in general?

                    • I was thinking that the Vanguard might be a subclass of the Titan especially when I read that quote from Amos Yuen. However, good eyes on spotting that belt buckle. With all that you've posted I'm pretty close to saying that Vanguard is indeed a subclass.

                    • Im interested on what the Vanguard specialization would be. Vanguard, to me, sounds close quarters.

Excellent, I totally forgot about that Mail Sack question at the end there! Very nice, I think you're on to something. Do you think each class has some sort of sub-class or specialty/advancement? That would be interesting.
