A Devastating 26-Word Challenge to President Obama's Leadership
When Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, stopped by the Senate floor Wednesday to help out Rand Paul with his filibuster, he spoke for several minutes in the guise of asking a question. But his remarks can really be boiled down to one powerful sentence that I've transcribed: Mr. President, what it comes down to is every American has the right to know when their government believes that it is allowed to kill them. Ponder the modesty of that claim. He is merely asking that American citizens be given the most basic information about their legal system: when they're lawfully subject to capital punishment. What would possibly justify withholding it? The mere fact that multiple U.S. senators, civil-liberties organizations and journalists are having to hound the Obama Administration for answers is a scandal. Promulgating the law is one of the most basic precursors of its legitimacy. Yet the bulk of Congress is as yet content with ignorance.
tl;dr
Mr. President, what it comes down to is every American has the right to know when their government believes that it is allowed to kill them.
This seems like an important question with all these rumors and confirmed reports of drone acquisition and their possible future use. What's your opinion on this confusing series of events? More importantly, can we discuss this as a community without nonsensical name-calling, trolling, or exaggerated fearmongering?

  • Couldn't a very similar statement be held against Bush? "Mr. President, what it comes down to is every American has the right to know when their government is spying on them."

      • I feel that when some people worry about drone strikes on U.S. soil, they're imagining drones zipping around everywhere blowing things up like it's Grand Theft Auto. That's just silly (not to mention, it's letting fear cloud your judgement). The fact is, we already do know when the government is allowed to kill someone in self defense (a drone strike is not "capital punishment"). This hasn't changed because of drones.

          • I have a question about this. Why is it news? The police may kill you. In fact, they do it all the time. Through inaction, the first responders, fire fighters and paramedics (I know the latter is private) can kill you. The military, under certain conditions, can kill you. Why is this news? Do we question the need for police to have pistols? When they asked for shotguns, did we freak out then? How about when the police formed SWAT units? Did THAT freak us out? Why are we questioning this particular upgrade to the police arsenal. Again, why is this news? This is staged for outrage. It is designed to be indefensible. Drone strikes on US soil? They will likely never happen. But should we tie the police's hands now, by answering a question, out of context, on the cuff, at a hearing that doesn't even cover it? This is lunacy. So, why is it news? I actually am involved with getting the drones in US skies. That's what my company helps with (I'm not making this up). The biggest question is how will they be certified for safety, and who will be responsible. The FAA is barely equipped to do it, and the other agencies that handle Police and Firefighters aren't at all. Then there are all the flight stations... Don't get me started on that. So, why are we focusing on this? Are we being told to be outraged now? Are we Pavlov's dogs, who just heard the bell ring, and now we are drooling?

            • Didn't they release their drone policy a couple weeks ago?
