The Oculus Rift seems great if you are playing by yourself. If that is the case then OcRift could be fun from time to time. What would be more appealing is Microsoft's Full Room Gaming Experience.
The problem with VRs like the OcRift is that it cuts you away from the outside world. Which isn't necessarily bad, but when it comes to needing to be aware of your surroundings (ex: other people in the room, animals running around, kids etc.) it just doesn't suite the needs of a social gamer, or one with priorities.

With social networks being what they are, they could easily reach you "inside" the virtual world. In house distractions would call for the use of your personal judgement and the right headphones (or maybe rift can have a forward looking camera for pip). Moreover I'm concerned because rift hasn't mentioned support for consoles and destiny hasn't mentioned support for PC's. This could be a sad case of two ships passing in the night.

True, but depending on the price you could get it for times when you can just play the game without and distractions.

Yes, exactly, I don't discourage using it if you have no distractions.
