Planetside 2 vs Destiny?

Planetside 2 is and MMOFPS, yup I said it. Is that what we are looking at with Destiny? And is Bungie concerned or looking at this taking notes.

Destiny is going an open-world MMOFPS-RPG route. It also seems to be way more rewarding to the player than Planetside 2, where you'd have to literally spend around 100 hours of grinding to unlock a single weapon if you didn't want to pay $7 per gun. Destiny is already better. It actually has a narrative as well (and an amazing one at that). Also, if I find out Destiny is like Planetside 2 in progression in any way, I'm canceling my pre-order. I'm not going to pay to be punished for not wanting to pay to progress. 100 hours for one gun isn't progression, it's punishment.

    •
Planetside 2 is and MMOFPS, yup I said it.
Has anyone ever disputed this? Also, I don't buy all the parallels people are trying to draw between these two. P2 is a persistent world with 6000 players per server. Destiny will not be. P2 (from what I've seen) doesn't have armor customization, thus making everyone fit into very specific player mold, thus reducing the characterization and personalization that I see Destiny providing. Destiny seems, in some facet, to be Chapter-based. P2, from what I see, is just a "okay, here's the world, now play in it" game. I have no problem with that, it's just distinctly different. Also, P2 is a PC exclusive so Destiny will not be competing with it much for sales or players.

      • No. Planetside 2 is a warfare simulation. By necessity, that involves having hundreds of players online at once to conduct fights on multiple battlegrounds. It is massively multiplayer online in the first-person shooter format. You've said nothing bold there. It would have been bold if you were talking about Destiny though, because the multiplayer aspect shall be limited to the constraints of public events and other gametypes. That is why Bungie refers to it as a "shared-world shooter". For the reason being that these two games have entirely different goals, somewhat different pay venues (F2P + microtransactions vs $60 upfront + microtransactions), somewhat different literary genres (military sci-fi versus mythic sci-fi), and different mechanical genres (MMOFPS vs SWS), I don't believe Bungie will be concerned about PS2. The may pay attention to how their microtransaction system has fared in making players feel welcome in purchasing while not making it so that purchasing players have exclusive or insurmountable advantages over F2Pers. So, both have microtransaction plans for attaining income and involve sci-fi shooting. Aside from this, the similarities end there and each game will appeal to different gamers.

        • Planetside 2 is competitive shooter, do you honestly think that Destiny to be like that?

          • Planet side 2 looks awesome though. But no destiny beats it because it has a story

          • Destiny isn't an MMO. Planetside/Planetside 2 has what, hundreds of players playing in the same place? Destiny won't be like that. From my understanding, there will be very few players playing together at one time. Probably not many more than there would be in Halo.

              • bungie has repeatedly refrained from labeling destiny as an mmo. it has some similarities but not enough to warrant calling it an mmo game. there is a world that is always being played on in destiny like in planetside but unlike planetside, players are seperated from the other players also in the game. seamless journey-like matchmaking will be the thing which brings players together but it will be the shared experiences of individual players having done things in the same locations as others, and the ability to share those experiences, that create the feeling of a shared world. Thus why bungie calls their game a "shared world shooter".

              • PS2 is a completely PvP game. I imagine that Destiny will look like something of a cross between Borderlands and Red Dead Redemption with a little Dark Souls server structure mixed in.

They're completely different games from what i know. PS2 is a game where players control resources, it's basically a PvP game with huge battles. Destiny is a game with story, missions and a ton of social activities. I personally prefer the style Destiny is headed, of course I would like to know a little bit more about how PvP will work on the game.
