Bungie is a Hollow Shell of it's Former Self

I remember Bungie was at the top of world in the game community. With the fame of making Halo and all, they were a great and successful developing team. The had so much potential...I'm not sure if I could say the same about Bungie right now. Now with this forum update and we all know it was done because of the money. They lost their unique touch that made Bungie what it was known for. The embraced the modern social sharing media to attract anybody. They traded honor for betrayal, love for hate, and pride for money. This wasn't supposed to happen! I feel like Bungie should of stayed with Halo! Imagine what COULD of been.

Nothing worth doing is ever easy. Sure, we could have kept the same old style flat forums. But we've been doing this for a long time. We saw how it failed once lots of people came. Conversations were impossible to follow, you relied on a crew of about 15 moderators to deal with hundreds of thousands of posts. Worse, our internal systems weren't flexible - it required great efforts to change even small things. There were three seperate code paths to show Halo stats, one for each client (web, mobile, and public api). That's insane. Worse, our aspirations for Destiny called for an even greater web/mobile footprint than in Halo. We'd be crushed. Time for a new approach. But what? Fortunately, we have faced this problem before. In 2003, Halo 2 was approaching. Our perl-based bungie.net had maybe 50,000 total users on it. It would have been crushed by Halo 2. So we threw it all away, and created the basic tech that ran the site from Halo 2 through Reach. Here, we faced a similar problem, and reached the same solution: start from the ground up. This web site is designed for a game you know little about. It is designed for both familiar and unfamiliar social interactions. It our platform for the future - not a marketing site, but a place to grow the community of our new universe from. It has some holes, some rough edges, sure. Your irrational fear of the words "social media" is just that: irrational. You've been part of a social media site for a while - bungie.net has always been one. We're committed to growing this site with you - both the fans who have been with us forever, and those jumping on board for the first time. It should be fun - just don't expect us to follow the status quo of your idea of what bungie.net should be all the time.

    • Halo is done buddy. Let it go. I love it like the next fanboy. You can't expect a company like Bungie to make the same game over and over. They started something and its open for interpretations now. Like Star Wars before it. Only 343/ Microsoft is going to run it into the ground. I would love Bungie to make great halo games on and on forever but it's genuinely not realistic. Times change. Games change. Ideas change. People change In this case, this website needs to change. Why? We will find out Soon (TM).

    • I agree with the OP. Bungie should have stuck with Halo, not updated their website, not changed anything and just stopped trying to do anything whatsoever. That's your problem Bungie. You keep trying. You'll never achieve anything if you keep trying. Shame on you.

      • Why is it that everyone whines when a developer moves on to do something new? I love Halo. I always have, and always will. I bought it the first day it came out in 2001. But simply because Halo got Bungie to the top of the FPS genre does not mean that they have to continue making the same game. How did Halo come about in the first place? Someone had a crazy idea to create a whole new world that nobody had ever thought to imagine before. Something with some much scope and magnitude that we the gaming world couldn't comprehend its complexity. Bungie is trying to create you an entirely new experience. Something you haven't ever seen before, and you want to throw it away because you're afraid of change? You want he same story of Master Chief always winning no matter what the odds? (If my last sentence didn't make it clear, MC should have remained dead. I love H4, but it started with Bungie, it should have ended with Bungie.) No, we need some innovation. CoD comes out with a new game every year and stays on top because they can keep people occupied with recycled gameplay until the next go around. Halo stands its ground for years at a time while creating a whole new experience from scratch. If a ten year old story line can do that then imagine a brand new world from the creators of the most revered FPS universe to date. You may question the way they do things, but over the 12 years I've been with them, Bungie has so far failed to disappoint me. You may want the old B-Net, or you may have been mad at their vid-doc on Sunday, but I can guarantee that every worker at Activision and Treyarch were crying tears of despair. Bring it Bungie.

        • They would have stayed with Halo for the money. They are making Destiny for us and they are in the process of improving Bungie.net for us. By your logic, Call of Duty is now not being made for the money.

          • Hey now, I like the changes around here. It's easier to use, easier to see more important information, and easier to be more social which is why I came here in the first place. How was this for the money? It seems that it made was for us, not money.

            • So, in short, Bungie should have stayed with Halo, but they left for the money. Does not compute.

            • I actually agree with you...kind of. I agree with you about the layout and them trying to attract social media and modern shit...but I don't think they have lost their potential, unique touch and still care about the community. We wanted a new game anyway. It's better for Bungie to be free...Destiny will be good and likely better than Halo. Bungie still has a great development team. Bungie is still itself. Not a Hollow Shell. :)

              • This makes zero sense - I am imagining what could have been..... [dream] Bungie beats a dead horse for another 10 years in the halo universe and doesn't take a risk on statting from scratch on a whole new universe[/dream] and they left for the money - you make zero sense - MUTED!

              • The website has changed, we all yelled and screamed for the first few days about change, then got used to it, some thing I like less than the old style, some I like more. The new version of the new website with the colours etc I like a lot for example. To recap: Get over yourself, and I have no idea what you are talking about with all this money grabbing logic (even though Bungie is a business too). 10/10

How is Bungie making money of the site's overhaul again? Personally, I think the site looks cleaner. With both the revamp of Bungie.net and Bungie's departure from the Halo franchise, I'm going to have to agree with Death that "Change is needed for growth." On the other hand, I was hoping for Destiny to be something outside of the fps genre to be honest. Other than the social integration, it looks like more of the same in terms of setting and gameplay so far. Also, Bungie's contract with Activision shows that they intend to have yearly releases between new games for the franchise and "comet releases" along with DLC. These facts make me nervous that what you are saying may be true in regards to Bungie being distracted from what made them great. BUT, as a huge fan, I'm going to withhold final judgement until we learn more about the game. Don't let us down, Bungie.

                • I couldn't disagree more. Halo was done at Halo 3 hence "Finish the Fight," and it needed to be shed along with the shackles of Microsoft. Now that Bungie is free from all of that just imagine where they can take us. With freedom in hand, Bungie is now on a swift journey to world domination, and I for one am along for the ride.
