I never hated Reach. Before Halo 4, I played it almost everyday; I even go back from time to time and play some matchmaking.
But I believe the main reason people didn't like Reach was because of the Armor Abilities. Just my guess.

Actually my main problem with reach was the actual levels, they were so boring! Trying to make level work both in the Reach SP and MP didn't turn out too well. I had a lot more fun playing the DLC maps. Unfortunately it seemed like I was pretty much the only one who bought them...
