Halo: What a twist!

So I was rewatching the above video and I am filled with so much nostalgia right now. It made me think of something, though. They show the clip of Cortana explaining what Halo really does. "Halo doesn't kill Flood, it kills their food! Humans, Covenant, whatever. We're all equally edible." I probably have every single line memorized from that game... hell, maybe the whole trilogy. I'm sure I'm not alone in that. Anyways, I just processed something that never really crossed my mind. You see, the introduction of the Flood? That was a plot twist. It was probably the most stunning thing I had ever seen in a story before that point, and still near the top today. It was one of the darkest moments in gaming history. But I never really thought about it in my head that... Cortana revealing what the Halos actually do? That too is a plot twist. Now, maybe this isn't enough to go on for a thread discussion, but it's interesting. I think that I was so caught up with the twist of the Flood introduction that I never really considered the implications of how great a twist the Halo rings were. I sort of just accepted it as a... 'Whoa' moment. Never counted it in my list of top plot twists before, like I do with the Flood introduction. Just thought it was interesting. Anybody similar?

  • While I think Halo was magical at the time of its release, its largely been trumped in terms of delivering "twists" and the like. As far as the most intriguing and unforeseeable twist in gaming, I'd have to go with Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel. The depth of the storytelling present in those games, especially the sequel is something I have yet to see replicated. KOTOR II has a ridiculously strong story only marred by Lucasart's decision to release the unfinished product (the ending is lacking). But, the ideas present are incredible. To date its one of the few games to include ambiguous morality decisions (ie: being charitable in-game can result in darkside actions) and a party player investment system whereby your party members can be influenced and even come to love or despise you based on your actions. It makes you have to think about not only your personal morality, but how you want to impact the lives of those your allied with in-game.

    • Have to stop watching, the nostalgia is too much. If they decide to shut down the servers for Halo 3 anytime soon I swear I'm gonna cry. And then get angry, and you Microsoft won't like me when I'm angry.

    • Although I imagine I will get some flack for this, COD is great at pulling of a twisting, shocking narrative. The bomb in COD4, and Shepards betrayal in MW2, were absolutely perfect, and some of the most memorable and jarring pieces of single player gaming I have witnessed to date.

Back then I'd have definitely considered it the plot twist of gaming. It was pretty big, especially for Halo. But now? Introducing "the ancient Faction C" as a virus trope to force Faction A and B into working together is a pretty common occurrence in speculative fiction. I've never found the Halo story or universe to be all that original to begin with. I mean, it's cool and fun and I like where the stories have gone [for the most part]; however, I don't think it's anywhere near "top material", if you see where I'm coming from.

      • If you really want to talk plot twists, let's discuss the twist cut out of the original Halo. You know, the part where Cortana turned on you after you return to the control room. Imagine how the entire series would be different the next time you look at anything Halo-related. It really messes with you.

      • Spec Ops the Line where you find out that you were the real villain. I knew the whole story before hand, but it still blew my mind. The execution was flawless.

      • My favourite twist in gaming is from the second Phoenix Wright game, when in the last case it turns out your client is actually guilty, but you've still got to defend him because his associate has your friend hostage, and will kill her unless you get your guilty client an acquittal. The best twists don't just stand on their own, they drive the rest of the plot. Plot twists like Revan, while good, didn't really affect things much - you were always going to stop Malak, regardless of whether or not you knew about your true identity.

      • When I first saw the Flood, I thought the same thing as you "plot twist". Very interesting and scary to fight yet you wanted to learn more about them and why they were there. The Flood is like the "ancient enemy" slogan that H4 had.

I never owned Halo CE - I just played bits of it at a friends house, which is a shame really, I only ever remember thinking 'thats pretty cool' seeing these new monsters through the guys helmet camera, I never really had any context to put them in though since I didn't know the story line. At that age though I found it difficult to follow story lines in computer games, even now I do. Im always thinking about what I just did in the game and what might happen next, or Ill see an explosion in a cut scene and start day dreaming about how real it looks compared to past games that I dont always listen properly to what the characters are saying. I always learn so much more about the story on my second play through because I have time to listen and I know what's about to come up next.

      • I don't exactly sit down and try to classify story moments as "whoa moments" or "plot twists" etc. I just admire how awesome the Halo story is.

        • Yeah, let me see, the last Plot Twists on the Scale of Halo were Bioshock, and Dead Space 3.

          • Yeah i suppose that is interesting. Its funny how i never viewed it as a plot twist though. It was just written so well that i accepted it o.o.

          • Bungie should do this dialog with all 4 Halos.

          • One of the most stunning plot twists you've seen is a surprise zombie attack? You don't read much, do you?

            • I've had similar moments in every Halo. They're all so well done. Plus they have such a ridiculously huge universe to work with, so anything is possible.
