Windows 7 vs Windows 8

I don't have a touch screen computer so I'll probably stick with Windows 7.

I have yet to use a touchscreen device but I plan on getting the Razer tablet so I've been doing my research. It appears to me that Win 8 absolutely sucks if you're not using a device with a touch screen. So my current laptop and desktop will remain using Win 7. And honestly I don't see 8 working very well on desktops even if they have touch screens because desktops aren't meant to be used that way. But on a tablet/touch screen laptop 8 looks amazing. When I get my tablet I foresee myself living in the new start menu. It's design is great when you use the proper hardware. My opinion on 7 vs. 8 changes depending on the hardware its running on.

Windows 8 is superior, especially if you have a touchscreen capable device which is what it was really designed to function best on.

It's a bit of a system shock, but the intended purpose isn't to be a new version of XP, as Vista and 7 seemed to be. It's an entirely new design optimized to work well on any platform, and I think it pulls it off very well. I prefer the Metro screen to the previous start window, and overall I really like the performance. For once it feels like something that hardware will have to catch up to, rather than the other way around. What I mean by that is currently we don't really have tablet devices that can optimally use the new features, because there's just so much you can do with it. Something like the Lenovo Twist, or any other convertible laptop/ultrabook and a peripheral mouse would be great with the OS.

I got a Windows 8 laptop yesterday, and I have been using it for 24 hours now. All I can say is, it doesn't deserve half the hate it gets but I do prefer Windows 7. I miss my start bar.

I like the flat aesthetic better, and I'm one of like 4 people who's a big fan of the Ribbon UI, lol. As for the Start Screen, I'm glad it's actually useful for something now. I like how it scales relative to screen size, so you're not always stuck with a list of 20 applications. I find selecting apps in the Start Screen is easier than doing so in the Start Menu because of the larger target size. And live tiles are handy to glance at before launching the desktop. I can check out the weather; calendar; top news in politics, tech, sports, etc; new mail; and social updates from my friends and family, all without launching an application. I like reading news stories with the Metro apps too: the layout is a lot cleaner and more clutter-free than a regular webpage. The marriage of the traditional desktop and the new Start Screen seemed weird at first, but the more I use Windows 8, the more I appreciate the design. I was concerned about not having a touchscreen, but it's not something I miss at all. Hot corners are super easy to use, and I think the Win8 experience on a desktop/laptop is better than that on a tablet. WinRT tablets are kind of useless, and Win8 tablets don't have the power or keyboard+mouse input to get the most out of the desktop.
