Solution for redundant tags and sub forums

Iggyhopper originally posted something similar to this here, and I wanted to expand upon the idea. The tag system has been a welcomed addition to Bungie.next and I'm making great use of it; however, I've found that more users are having trouble finding where their topic should be and what they should follow to find the most activity. Imagine that you have a Red Lego brick, but you have to split it into 4 buckets based on color, shape, size, and set, instead of just putting it in the bucket labeled "Red". Thus, you end up with dozens of buckets instead of just a few. While the search option certainly aids this process, I feel that the tags still lack a cohesive structure once seen under defined forums, which in turn leads to ambiguity and redundancy. The Problem "#Cartoons", "#Politics", "#Music", and "#Computers" all fall under the "Off Topic" description, yet topics with that content can be scattered across "#OffTopic", "Flood", "TheFlood", or even just labelled with one tag. All users cannot be expected to properly tag posts, which means threads end up spread across the forum, thus splitting activity. Half of the Community forum is one way, half is another. Half of The Flood is one way, a quarter is somewhere else, and another quarter has disappeared. The thing is though, most haven't actually left, but are rather spread thin due to the ambiguity and lack of clear structure among the tags. The Solution Part 1 - Tag Groups (sub-forums) One way to solve this issue is to group related tags together. This effectively creates sub-forums by condensing all of the aforementioned 'sub-tags' under one official "Off-Topic" primary group.
Examples: Gaming: #Gaming; #Halo; #Skyrim; #GTA; #Xbox; #PlayStation; #WiiU; etc Community: #Community; #Penthalon; #Bungie #MailSack #Septagon, #Help; etc. Off Topic: #OffTopic; #Music; #Movies; #Politics; #Jokes; #Cartoons; #Cars; #Advice; etc. Feedback: #Feedback; #BungieNext; #BnetBugs; etc.
Iggyhopper's Tab concept (originally expanded upon in this thread) serves to organize official tag groups so that each set of related tags is easily accessible. The Solution Part 2 - Automatic Tag Suggestions Again, all users cannot be expected to know how to tag properly, which is where Automatic Tag Suggestions come into play. These will be official tags used to sort a post into a 'sub-forum' by default, which is then further sorted by the "related trending tags" you can follow (#Cartoons, #Politics, #Music, etc., which all fall under "Off-Topic"). This system requires users pick an official tag when they make a thread, and they then have the option of describing it further (though it's not an issue so long as it's under the right primary tag). The Solution Part 3 - Sort Forum by Tag If I want to see #Politics threads, I will go into the Off-Topic Tag Group and then "Sort by #Politics". This way, tags are no longer taking responsibility of "Forums", but rather are used to describe topics. I can still follow tags and I will not have to see tags that I'm not interested in; however, the difference with this system is that tags are linked together. This sort of automated structuring is necessary to enhance both the efficiency and convenience of the Bungie forums. It can help reduce redundancy, organize topics, and get users to exactly where they need to go twice as fast. Thanks for reading, and please share your support and any other ideas you have to make Bungie.next more accessible for all.
