Ever hear the expression beggars can't be choosers? Bungie doesn't have the luxury of turning away PC players based on their operating system right now. The only thing stopping every single Linux player from playing Destiny 2 (and probably Marathon too) is BattlEye. Destiny and Marathon's direct competitors support Linux just fine and both games have exponentially higher concurrency than Destiny 2 does.
As we mentioned previously, BattlEye on Proton integration has reached a point where all a developer needs to do is reach out BattlEye to enable it for their title. No additional work is required by the developer besides that communication. Partners have started turning on BattlEye support for their titles, meaning these games are now working on Steam Deck.
Starting today Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord and ARK: Survival Evolved's BattlEye anti-cheat systems are working on Proton, and we expect others to follow soon. If you'd like to try this out now, you'll need today's update of Proton Experimental as well as the Steam Client Beta.
If you're using BattlEye and would like to support Steam Deck, reach out to BattlEye directly to request that they enable support.

The vast majority of titles on Steam work perfectly fine on Linux without additional tweaks or tinkering. Just hit play and have fun.
"But Linux doesn't have the marketshare to justify the effort"
1.) It's just a single email Bungie needs to send to BattlEye
2.) Linux users are tech savvy enough to work through technical issues (if any) themselves. No one's asking for "support". Just stop blocking us entirely.
3.) As of typing this, Friday December 5th 2025 9:38PM Central Standard prime time in North America, immediately after Renegades launched, there are 50,239 players playing Destiny 2. According to the Steam hardware survey 3.20% of Steam users are on Linux. Based on Steam's estimated monthly active users, that's roughly ~4.7 million Linux users. That means there's 93x more Linux users than Destiny 2 players on steam right now. This number is sure to grow exponentially with additional Steam hardware and the impending desktop release of SteamOS.
"But whitelisting Destiny 2 would expose players to hackers and cheaters"
Meanwhile Arc Raiders (Marathon's direct competition) and Warframe (Destiny's direct competition) both support Linux. Are you really suggesting that games like Arc Raiders, The Finals, Counter-Strike and ironically Halo MCC & Infinite are less competitive than crucible? lol
Bungie leadership would sell their souls to the devil himself if they could get even 1% of Steam's Linux users playing their game, 1% would nearly double their concurrency on PC, and based on how much I hear Linux users say that they'd play it if they could, I believe that's realistic. Linux users want to play Destiny and Marathon. Also, I hear from Windows users quite often that Destiny is the only reason they're still on Windows.
I don't think it's exactly controversial to say that Destiny could benefit from more players right now.

BattleEye isn't the only anti cheat used for Destiny 2.
