The problem with most (GM) nightfall strikes

Most nightfall strikes are boring af. The reason for that is their general design: They require static, cautious gameplay, using cheese spots and exploits to either shorten overly stretched out encounters or making it easier or even feasible at all to beat the boss (not talking Esoterikk and the likes here). All you need to do in most nightfall strikes is to sit in some good cover, swap wells, and fend off endless waves of ads. This is particularly true for the battlegrounds strikes. There are only very few exceptions to this rule. One of them is The Lightblade's boss encounter. You cannot cheese it (not that I know), and you cannot beat it by sitting behind some cover, swapping wells and pounding the ads until they're all gone and the boss has been ground down. You need keep moving, have good situational awareness and communication and have your super at the right time to handle the champions and knight majors when they appear. It doesn't simply throw endless waves of ads at the players, but the fashion they are released with and act is well thought through and challenging without being totally overwhelming. For me, this is a perfect GM nightfall boss encounter. It was challenging, thrilling and demanding. Another good example is the Scarlet Keep's boss encounter. You can cheese it, but you really don't have to. Like in The Lightblade, you can't just sit in some corner or behind some pillar, but need to handle champions and major quickly. Again, a challenge keeping you on your toes without just having to resort to throwing crazy amounts of ads at the players. Back to the battlegrounds: The only recipe Bungie has found to make these hard is to try and overwhelm the players with massive amounts of ads, tons of champions appearing at once, and everything being bullet sponges. That's pathetic. That's not a challenge and it does not require true skill. Don't tell me it would be skill to stand in a niche of a pillar and stun lock the boss in place for the entire encounter while a triple invis hunter collects and dunks arc orbs, or it would be skill to stand below a stair case which is the only place giving you enough cover from wizards and other ranged attack ads to be able to handle them. That's not skill, that's knowledge at best. Before you start mocking instead of thinking: I have gilded my conqueror (not for the first time), and I have done this week's GM nightfall (again); However, it bored the crap out of me, because all you need to do is to skip 2/3 of the first encounter, then take ages for the second one because it throws so much of the same stuff in the same fashion at you over and over, and then sit below a staircase and fend off tons of the same stuff coming at you again and again. The only challenge that poses to me is to my patience and ability to endure boredom. Being able to handle this GM nf is nothing to be proud of. TL;DR: Most GM nightfalls are boring af, because they encourage or enforce static gameplay and use of cheeses and exploits instead of requiring dynamic, fluid player action, encouraging roaming the encounter areas and employing actual tactics.

  • I feel like GM Nightfalls is still hard locked at farming normal strikes than Battlegrounds, just like Vanguard Ops. Especially when the only difficulties that make it work is Master/GM from a reward standpoint due to how low Hero/Legend’s drop rate can be. Also, would Lake of Shadows boss fight be another one that can be either cheesed or beaten legit?
