AI is scary, a mini rant

It’s surprising how much AI changed, just a few years ago, we never heard of it and never even thought that it would get this way. Not there’s AI art generators, chat GPT, and character.ai . We got to a point where we can literally just talk to random people from video games. We could talk to Saul Goodman and make AI art surrounding him. And it sounds so real too. They make it sound like something that the characters would actually say. Now why is it scary? Because of its potential. We’re likely nowhere near its max power, and thankfully chat GPT cannot accept requests that pertain to violence. But the fact that someone’s out there using character.ai to talk to an anime girl or something like that is just… weird and terrifying, and I don’t know why. AI art even got to a point where it was submitted on Bungie’s TWAB, and they didn’t seem to notice until it was pointed out. If it was that way now, I don’t know if I want to know how good it could be in the future. Thanks for coming to my mini rant. How are y’all doing?

  • AI has been used for years by bringing back dead celebrity’s by the way of animation they recently used it for ghostbusters afterlife by digitally creating the likeness of Harold Ramis over actor Bob Gunton and Marlon Brando for the Richard Donner cut of superman 2 and Swedish group Abba for their latest tour as their younger selves .

I'm fine- ai still can't give correct information most of the time. We are still far from creating a singularity level Artificial intelligence that thinks like us and knows us better than we know ourselves. Chat GpT is certainly going to accelerate technological innovation in AI, but that's about as scary as it will get

When you tell it it to make something, it doesn’t actually recognize what you are telling it. It just blends images together until you like it (its a little more complicated but u get the idea). I hate the fact that people use “AI” to describe it, yet it isn’t actually alive. It is simply a fancy search engine that can make the results for you. I am in the art field, and the only job I could see AI taking is concept art, which has been slowly been phased out already. Deepfakes are an issue, but there will probably be ways to tell whether a video is real or not. People are doing the stupid thing they do, where they freak out about something and think they know everything about it. I barely know how diffusion works, and I am not that freaked out, because I understand the actual uses for AI, especially in the art field. AI is an amazing tool, and that is it. A lot of people think that AI is going to take everybody’s jobs, but it can’t, it is not alive, and it will never be smart enough. It will make some jobs obsolete, but that happens all the time. The internet made a lot of things obsolete, and it is an amazing tool. I’m not trying to attack anyone here, just ranting about uneducated people.

      • The AI isn't the problem, it's the knuckle-draggers that will be all too pleased to outsource their thinking and decision making processes to something that cannot be understood. Automation of more complex tasks is going to be a huge benefit to a multitude of industries. But AI and ML will not be safe to be let loose and trusted where expertise and analysis are required. We don't even let people have unsupervised free reign like that where it counts. But I will not be at all surprised when it reaches the "good enough" threshold for people eager to cut corners begin to a hand over their thought processing to the computer.

        • AI represents a new frontier, and our instinct is to react to the unknown with fear. I write music as a hobby, and a number of new AI programs are coming out that assist in composing, arranging and mastering music. In short these programs are like collaborating with another person. They toss out raw musical ideas, but they still require a human sense of taste and emotional awareness in order to edit out the BAD ideas, and develop and properly use the good ones. Like all good technologies, it augments human abilities (great treatment for creative blocks) but they are nowhere near capable of replacing those abilities. IOW, AI generates music might be interesting to listen to—-as a curiosity—-but it’s not going to make you feel anything other than that. Except by sheer accident. Like the old joke about giving 100 monkeys word processors, and letting them type. Given enough time and luck? They’ll eventually bang out the complete works of Shakespeare. But it won’t be art…or entertainment.

I see it as being no different than any other tool. But that means that common tools are very dangerous when misused or abused. Putting an AI in charge of something is lot like rolling a die, the die is limited by how many sides it has, and the AI by its algorithms… doesn’t mean the die will land on the side you want. If the job can reliably be done without an AI then perhaps it should. AI should be used to fill in our shortcomings, not to take us out of the equation all together.

                    • Meh. I think they'd be great in customer service situations if it were to get to ACTUAL answers that you need for your reasons for calling. All too often the canned responses only give the most remedial options, and not any option to get to a person who may (mostly not) be able to help you get where you need to go. But all in all, these things are only as good as they are programmed to be, which will always be limited. It's not like they are going to be able to give real insightful use, nor become self aware. At least I wouldn't expect this in my lifetime.

                      • I find AI art depressing. It is often quite beautiful, but for some reason knowing it wasn't made by a person spoils something. I dunno.

The scary thought for me would be when AI can create and advance other AI. It’s nowhere near perfect yet. Ive found that it’s pretty easy to confuse and trip up Chat GPT. It’s still in great and usually right though. The types of stories you can get it to write are pretty fun. Eventually AI and robotics will take over a lot of the mundane jobs. Government will have to figure out a basic supplemental income system once that happens. AI generated gaming worlds sound pretty fun.

                          • It's wild, I have a client that has been flaky on payments for a couple of months so I've just decided to simply not write for them and have ChatGPT do it instead. Of course, with an AI disclosure, but they never read their own posts to know it. Also of course, making sure to not actually use any of their keywords either but having the groundwork for them to be seamlessly implemented should they decide to pay up
